What you are electing
Nine trustees run the Vancouver School Board. They approve the district budget, set catchment boundaries, decide which schools open, close or are sold, and set district policy such as whether police officers work in schools.
What they do not control is the money. Teacher pay, the funding formula and seismic upgrade budgets are set by the province. A board can decide how to spend what it is given, and can argue publicly for more, and that argument is a large part of what trustees do.
Five of nine seats carry a decision. School board races draw the least attention of the four on this ballot and are often decided by the smallest margins.
