Campaign dispute
City court application over Chinese characters on the ballot
Chief election officer Jason Twa asked the B.C. provincial court to decide whether seven candidates, including Sio, could have usual names that combine an English name with Chinese characters printed on the October 17 ballot. The city's lawyer argued the Chinese names were not part of the candidates' usual names, that all the candidates except one appeared to use only English names on social media, and that adding the Chinese names later in the filing process was odd.
