Which parties are running for Park Board
Seven commissioner seats on the Board of Parks and Recreation. 35 candidates are standing, from 8 parties.
WHAT THIS BODY DOES
What you are electing
Vancouver is the only major city in Canada that elects a separate board to run its parks. Seven commissioners control parks, community centres, pools, rinks, beaches and the trees on park land.
The board has its own legal authority under the Vancouver Charter rather than sitting under Council, which is why its future has been contested. The current Council asked the province to amend the Charter and abolish it. The board still exists, and seven commissioners are being elected on October 17.
Four of seven seats carry a decision. Because the board is small, a party running five or more candidates is asking for outright control of it.
