OneCity's School Board plan: Kingsgate, One Britannia, school meals and open meetings

OneCity's School Board candidates would rebuild Kingsgate Mall and Britannia as public hubs with schools, child care, community centres and homes, build a universal school meal program, protect arts and music, open board meetings and limit AI chatbots to Grades 10 to 12.

SCHOOL BOARD

The aim of Better Schools, in the party's words

OneCity has a plan to harness the power of the Vancouver School Board and transform how our city expands childcare, invests in our students and staff, and leverages the potential of the VSB’s public land, for the public good.

The party's own words, Our Plans

OneCity's School Board candidates, Krista Sigurdson, Rory Brown, Sherry Breshears, Christopher Lee (李基鵬) and Steve Cardwell, released Better Schools on September 29, 2026. The party's idea is to use land the Vancouver School Board already owns to build child care, community centres and homes, without selling any of it.

Two building projects lead the plan: a community hub on the Kingsgate Mall site in Mount Pleasant, and One Britannia, a rebuild of the 18-acre Britannia site in East Vancouver. The rest is district-wide: child care in schools, universal meals, protected school land, open board meetings, protected arts and music, Indigenous language learning, supports for students with disabilities, mental health services and limits on AI.

The School Board runs schools and plans its land. Housing and rezoning need City Council, community centres need the Park Board, and the Province sets the funding formula and child care licensing, so much of the plan depends on other bodies agreeing.

What is OneCity's School Board platform?

OneCity's Better Schools plan, released September 29, 2026, would rebuild Kingsgate Mall and Britannia as public hubs with schools, child care and homes, create universal school meals, protect arts and music, open board meetings and limit AI chatbots to Grades 10 to 12 (OneCity Better Schools plan).

Who are OneCity's School Board candidates?

Krista Sigurdson, Rory Brown, Sherry Breshears, Christopher Lee (李基鵬) and Steve Cardwell are OneCity's School Board candidates. They released the party's Better Schools plan on September 29, 2026 (OneCity Better Schools plan).

Would OneCity sell Vancouver School Board land?

No. OneCity says its plan would use land the Vancouver School Board already owns to build child care, community centres and homes, without selling any public land (OneCity Better Schools plan, September 29, 2026).

Does OneCity support universal school meals in Vancouver?

Yes. OneCity would build a universal, nutritious school food program so every VSB student, whatever their family's income, can get healthy food during the school day (OneCity Better Schools plan, September 29, 2026).

Can the School Board build housing and community centres?

The School Board controls its land, but housing needs City Council to approve rezoning and permits, and community centres are run by the Park Board. OneCity says it would plan its Kingsgate and Britannia hubs with its Council and Park Board candidates (OneCity Better Schools plan).
