TEAM for a Livable Vancouver on parks: save the Park Board and a 50 metre pool

TEAM for a Livable Vancouver calls its parks plan Better Parks and Recreation for Everyone. It would keep the elected Park Board, invest $739 million over four years, halt Stanley Park logging pending review, aim for 1.1 hectares of park per 1000 people and put a 50 metre pool in the Aquatic Centre replacement.

PARK BOARD

The aim of Park Board, in the party's words

TEAM supports an independent, properly-funded, elected Park Board that will protect, improve, and expand neighbourhood parks, recreational facilities, and community centres.

The party's own words, Our Positions

Parks and Recreation is one of TEAM for a Livable Vancouver's ten positions, and the party runs Park Board candidates to carry it out. TEAM says it supports "an independent, properly-funded, elected Park Board". Its action list is one long list, which we have grouped into chapters on protecting the Park Board, on parks, trees and green space, and on access, safety and community centres.

The headline promises are to withdraw the City's request to the Province to eliminate the elected board, return finance, operations and facilities to it, and invest $739 million over four years in parks and recreation facilities. TEAM would also halt logging in Stanley Park until an independent review, aim for 1.1 hectares of park per 1000 people, make temporary parks permanent, restore pre-COVID access to Stanley Park and Beach Avenue, add off-leash dog areas in every neighbourhood and include a 50 metre pool in the Vancouver Aquatic Centre replacement.

The seven Park Board commissioners control parks, community centres, pools, rinks and beaches, so most of these items are theirs to decide. The board's existence is set by the Vancouver Charter, which only the Province can change, and the capital plan that pays for park buildings is approved by City Council, so several promises also need TEAM councillors.
