TEAM for a Livable Vancouver on schools: no enrolment lotteries, music and swimming for all
TEAM for a Livable Vancouver says its School Board would end enrolment lotteries, stop selling school land, reverse the Queen Elizabeth Annex sale, press the Province on seismic risk, bring back band and strings, teach every child to swim and pause Microsoft Copilot 13+ in secondary schools.
SCHOOL BOARD
The aim of School Board, in the party's words
A TEAM School Board will focus on improving classrooms and school facilities while improving the school experience for all students and their families.
Schools is the last of TEAM for a Livable Vancouver's ten positions, and the party runs a School Board candidate. TEAM quotes the School Act, which says a board "is responsible for the improvement of student achievement", and says a TEAM board would meet that duty through better neighbourhood planning, open decisions and well-resourced classrooms. Its chapters here are access to schools in all neighbourhoods, and classrooms, programs and the budget.
On access, TEAM would end enrolment lotteries through long-range planning with the City, keep siblings together, stop selling school land, reverse the proposed sale of Queen Elizabeth Annex, keep existing schools open and press the Province on schools it says are at high seismic risk. In classrooms, it would move money from administration to teaching, bring back Elementary Band and Strings, run a swimming program for every child, add applied skills and dual credit courses, and pause Microsoft Copilot 13+ until research shows the benefits outweigh the risks and families are consulted.
The Board of Education runs Vancouver public schools, sets catchment boundaries and approves the district budget, so trustees could act on most of this section. Teacher pay, the provincial funding formula and money for new and safer buildings are set by the Province, so on those items the board can only negotiate or press.
