Vancouver Liberals on health: washrooms, supportive housing, clinics and rats

Health and Environment in the Vancouver Liberals' 2026 plan proposes new public washrooms, 24-hour bathrooms and showers in new supportive housing, reversing what the party calls a supportive housing ban, half property tax for clinics, Downtown Eastside Wi-Fi, a rat panel and more recycling depots.

CITY COUNCIL

The aim of Health and Environment, in the party's words

Our city streets and parks are covered with animal and human poop, a clear sign of how City Hall is failing to do its basic job.

The party's own words, Kareem's Plan for a Better Vancouver

The Vancouver Liberals' Health and Environment topic opens with the state of the streets. The party says streets and parks are covered with animal and human waste, and that Vancouver has the fewest public bathrooms of any major city in North America. Its answer is new public washrooms across the city, and a rule that every new supportive housing project include public bathrooms and showers open 24 hours a day.

The topic also covers housing and local services. The party would reverse on day one what it calls a ban on new supportive housing, cut property taxes in half for family doctors and walk-in clinics, help bring free public Wi-Fi to the Downtown Eastside, oppose cuts to the public library, form an expert panel on rats and open more recycling depots. It raises noise from loud vehicles and a shrinking tree canopy, but gives no action for either.

Council funds city facilities, sets the property tax rate and decides where supportive housing is approved, so most of these items are city decisions. Health services, treatment and drug policy belong to the Province and the federal government.
