Free transit for every resident is the largest transport commitment published by any party in this election. COPE goes as far as free transit for under-18s; Bright Future publishes 100%.

Fares are set by TransLink, a regional body that Vancouver does not control. A city can contribute money toward a fare programme and can advocate through the Mayors’ Council, but it cannot make transit free by a council vote.

Can a city make transit free?

Not on its own. TransLink sets fares across the region and Vancouver is one voice on its Mayors’ Council. A city can put its own money toward covering fares, which is how free-transit programmes usually work. Bright Future has not published a cost or a funding source.
