Independent Parks Party Vancouver 2026

A moratorium on tree removals, a pesticide ban, and disputes over Stanley Park's forest

What Independent Parks Party has published about climate and buildings, and what it has not.

CLIMATE AND BUILDINGS

Independent Parks Party on climate

Most of the platform's environmental positions concern trees on Park Board land: a moratorium on removals except imminently hazardous trees, a ban on glyphosate and similar herbicides, and a review of artificial turf fields.

Several positions are specific to Stanley Park's forest, including a dispute over how the Board is replanting it after storm damage and logging, and a demand to follow the terms of the federal lease and a historic-site designation that the platform says require keeping the native forest.

The platform names no cost or completion date for any of these.

What they say they will do

  • A moratorium on tree removals except imminently hazardous trees

The party would halt further tree removals on Park Board land, apart from trees judged imminently hazardous, until a full review of the reasons for removals is done.

    Independent Parks Party

  • Ban glyphosate and similar herbicides and pesticides

Glyphosate and other herbicides and pesticides judged environmentally hazardous would be banned on Park Board land, alongside a scientific inquiry into other ways to manage invasive species.

    Independent Parks Party

  • Halt replanting in Stanley Park pending a scientific inquiry

The party would stop replanting farmed, selectively bred trees in Stanley Park until an inquiry assesses the consequences.

    Independent Parks Party

  • Follow the Stanley Park federal lease and historic-site terms on the native forest

The party says the Stanley Park lease with the federal government, and the park's Commemorative Integrity Statement as a National Historic Site, both require preserving the native coastal western hemlock forest rather than replanting it as a different mix of trees.

    Independent Parks Party

  • Rescind the current tree inspection policy

The party would rescind and replace a recently passed tree inspection policy that it says does not require inspections by provincially certified arborists, which it says conflicts with provincial standards.

    Independent Parks Party

  • Review artificial turf sports fields for environmental harm

The party would commission a scientific and environmental review of every artificial turf sports field on Park Board land.

    Independent Parks Party

  • Stop Charleson Park and Memorial South Park ponds from drying up

The party would stop allowing these two ponds to dry out, which it says kills the animals that depend on them.
