SCHOOL BOARD · PAGES 51 TO 70
The aim of School Board, in the party's words
Vancouver's public schools should give every student the opportunity to learn, belong and succeed.
The school board section of the Green Party of Vancouver's 2026 platform runs from page 51 to page 70 and sets out what the party's candidates for the Vancouver Board of Education would do. The party states its aim as 'Vancouver's public schools should give every student the opportunity to learn, belong and succeed.' It names four guiding principles: student success, equity, reconciliation and environmental stewardship. Its chapters cover school funding and budgets, support for students, safe and climate-ready buildings, schools as community spaces, and governance and reconciliation.
The party's own summary on page 52 lists its largest commitments. The Greens would press for stable, multi-year provincial funding, put teachers, educational assistants and counsellors first in budget decisions, and review school fees that keep students out. They would keep seismic safety at the top of capital priorities, citing 43 of 106 VSB buildings at high seismic risk, request a pause on AI chatbots in schools for a review, expand child care on school sites, and make board decisions easier for the public to follow.
The party says it would focus on what the board can deliver directly and be clear when provincial action and funding are needed. The Board of Education runs Vancouver public schools, sets catchment boundaries and approves the district budget. The Province sets teacher pay and the funding formula, and the platform itself looks to the Province for seismic and other capital funding. Street safety near schools depends on City Council, and several items are shared with the Park Board.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Questions about School Board
What is in the Green Party of Vancouver's school board platform?
The Green Party of Vancouver's school board platform, on pages 51 to 70, covers school funding and budgets, support for every student, safe and climate-resilient buildings, schools as community spaces, and governance and reconciliation. The party says its aim is for every student to have the opportunity to learn, belong and succeed (platform, page 51).
What are the Vancouver Greens' top priorities for the Vancouver School Board?
The Greens' summary lists these priorities: fully fund public education and spend it responsibly, support the people who make schools work, remove barriers so every student can take part, make schools safe, healthy and climate-resilient, turn schools into community resilience hubs, and govern transparently while advancing reconciliation (platform, page 52).
Does the Green Party of Vancouver want to pause AI chatbots in schools?
Yes. The Green Party of Vancouver would request a pause on AI chatbots in schools so students, parents and educators can be consulted, with a full review of policy and procedures, including ethics and effects on thinking and learning (platform, pages 52 and 63).
Can the Vancouver School Board fix school funding by itself?
The Province sets the funding formula and teacher pay, so the board can only ask for more. The Green Party of Vancouver says it would focus on what the board can deliver directly and be clear when provincial action and funding are required (platform, page 51).
What would Green school trustees do about earthquake safety in Vancouver schools?
The Green Party of Vancouver would keep seismic safety at the top of the board's capital priorities, saying 43 of 106 VSB buildings remain at high seismic risk at an estimated $1.63 billion. It would ask the Province to approve and fund outstanding seismic projects (platform, page 61).
How would the Vancouver Greens connect schools with the wider community?
The Greens would expand child care and after-school care on school sites, open more school gyms, fields, libraries and kitchens to community use outside class hours, and work with City Council and the Park Board on safer walking and cycling routes to school (platform, pages 64 and 65).
How does the Green Party of Vancouver sum up its school board plan?
The Green Party of Vancouver closes with five aims: fund the classrooms, support the students, take care of our schools, connect schools to the community, and govern openly and responsibly. It says that when a solution sits outside the board's authority, it will say so clearly and build the partnerships required (platform, page 70).
