Employment Land Protection: what the Platform 2026 says

Employment land means land zoned for work, such as factories, warehouses, workshops and docks. The Green Party of Vancouver says this land is at risk of being converted by speculators to other uses. The first three commitments protect the land and the jobs on it. The last three are about new industries the party wants to grow there.

The Greens would protect employment land and cultural spaces so they stay focused on jobs, production and manufacturing. They would keep industrial land for manufacturing, logistics, marine industries, food processing and other industrial work where it fits. The party would also use Vancouver's position as a port city and regional centre to attract investment and grow trade and manufacturing jobs that can support a family.

The second half of the chapter looks at climate work. The party would create jobs in building retrofits, which means upgrading existing buildings to use less energy, and in clean technology, green infrastructure and climate adaptation. It would support a circular economy, where materials are reused, repaired and remanufactured instead of thrown away. Council zones industrial land, so the land protections are its decision. Growing new industries also depends on private companies.

  3. Canada's gateway to the Pacific

    Who has the power
City, with others Council can offer zoning and business support, but investment and jobs depend on private companies and other governments.
  4. Grow the climate resilience economy

The party would create jobs through building retrofits, clean technology, green infrastructure and climate adaptation projects. The Greens say the right policies would let Vancouver cut emissions and become more resilient by investing in future industries.

    Who has the power
City, with others Council sets Vancouver's own building bylaw and pays for city infrastructure, while most retrofit work is done by private owners and companies.
  5. Clean technology leadership

The Greens would support Vancouver's leadership in green buildings, energy systems, climate adaptation and clean transportation by helping local companies, workers and innovators grow in the global clean economy.

City Council Council decides what business support the city offers through its own staff and budget.
  6. Waste less, build more

The party would support a circular economy in which materials are reused, repaired, recovered and remanufactured instead of thrown away. The platform says the cheapest, cleanest and most resilient resource is the one we already have.

    Who has the power
City, with others Council can set city rules and purchasing, but reuse and repair depend on businesses and residents across the region.
