Pete Fry and the Green Party of Vancouver won the 2026 Vancouver municipal election by building a large volunteer network and running a positive campaign, while spending far less on advertising than ABC Vancouver, according to the party's campaign manager.

Khadoni Pitt Chambers, who managed the Green campaign, told Daily Hive Urbanized on 21 October that the party heard doubt throughout the race about whether it could win without matching ABC Vancouver's resources. "There was a tonne of doubt, but honestly, we never let it get to us," Pitt Chambers said. "And I always remind people that Green votes were always the best when it comes to cost per dollar."

The preliminary count from the City shows Fry received 98,494 votes. Daily Hive reported that ABC Vancouver's Ken Sim received over 67,000 votes. Those are preliminary figures.

Every Green who ran for City Council, Park Board and the Vancouver School Board won their seat, alongside COPE and, to a smaller degree, OneCity candidates.

A ground campaign in targeted areas

Stewart Prest, a political science professor at the University of British Columbia, told Daily Hive that the Greens ran what he called "the chillest campaign for mayor" he had seen, focusing on listening rather than attacking. Prest said the party had an effective campaign despite having a smaller organisation than ABC Vancouver.

Pitt Chambers said the party focused on areas where it already had strong support, including Mount Pleasant, East Vancouver, Kitsilano and the West End. At the same time, the party worked to expand beyond those areas.

COPE's ground operation also contributed to the result. Pitt Chambers told Daily Hive the Green Party worked with other progressive parties during the campaign.

Responding to attack ads with a positive message

The Greens ran their campaign in part as a response to ABC Vancouver's attack ads targeting Fry. Pitt Chambers told Daily Hive that after Ken Sim used language about the city, the team decided to frame Fry as an answer to those concerns, using direct language that the Greens then built into social media content.

The party's video editing team, which Pitt Chambers nicknamed the "small fries," produced content that the campaign manager said gave the party reach in the final weeks.

What comes next for the new council

The new council is made up of four Green, four COPE, one OneCity and one ABC Vancouver seat, according to Daily Hive's report of the preliminary count. Fry can assemble a six-vote majority with OneCity without COPE's support. Pitt Chambers told Daily Hive the Green Party worked with other progressive parties during the campaign, which included COPE.

Questions this story answers

How many votes did Pete Fry get in the 2026 Vancouver election?

Pete Fry received 98,494 votes in the preliminary count from the City of Vancouver, according to The Canadian Wire's report of the unofficial results. Daily Hive described this figure as nearly 100,000 votes. These are preliminary numbers and the City has not yet published the full official count.

How did the Green Party of Vancouver win with fewer resources than ABC Vancouver?

Khadoni Pitt Chambers, the party's campaign manager, told Daily Hive that the Greens relied on a large volunteer base rather than advertising spending. Pitt Chambers said Green votes historically produced a stronger return per dollar than other parties. The party used social media, positive messaging and community outreach across neighbourhoods where it already had support, including Mount Pleasant, East Vancouver, Kitsilano and the West End.

Which Green Party candidates won seats in 2026?

Every Green candidate who ran won their seat, according to Daily Hive's report on the election results. That includes Pete Fry for mayor and all Greens who ran for City Council, Park Board and the Vancouver School Board. The full list of elected candidates is at voche.me/results.

Did the Green Party work with COPE and OneCity to win the 2026 election?

Yes, according to Daily Hive. Campaign manager Khadoni Pitt Chambers told Daily Hive that the party worked with other progressive parties during the campaign. UBC political science professor Stewart Prest told Daily Hive the Greens had an effective ground campaign even without large advertising budgets.

What is Pete Fry's political background before becoming mayor?

Fry ran for mayor for the first time in 2026 as the Green Party of Vancouver's candidate. Before the mayoral race, he had served on Vancouver City Council and had already put forward items in opposition to ABC Vancouver's agenda during that time, according to Daily Hive.

How did ABC Vancouver lose so many seats?

Daily Hive's report does not focus on ABC's losses in this article. The Green Party's Khadoni Pitt Chambers said the Greens ran a positive campaign that pushed back on what they called a narrative that Vancouver was in decline. The full 2026 election results are at voche.me/results.

Did the 2026 election result in a majority council?

No. The Green Party holds four of ten council seats, matched by four seats for COPE. OneCity's Lucy Maloney holds one seat, and ABC Vancouver's Mike Klassen holds one. Pete Fry and the Greens can assemble a six-vote majority with OneCity, but that would leave COPE out. These seat counts are from the preliminary results reported by Daily Hive.
