What BCEHS said
Leanne Heppell, Executive Vice President and Chief Ambulance Officer of BC Emergency Health Services, told Daily Hive that there is no circumstance where violence against paramedics or any healthcare worker is acceptable.
"Our paramedics come to work every day to care for people, often during some of the most difficult and vulnerable moments in their lives," Heppell said. "They deserve to be able to do that work safely."
BCEHS said it will review the circumstances of the incident and will notify WorkSafeBC, as it does with any incident that has the potential to affect employee health and safety.
The earlier attack
The November 3 incident follows an unprovoked assault at the Vancouver Art Gallery on October 30. At 10:30 a.m. that morning, a 27-year-old woman walking in front of the 800 block of West Georgia Street was allegedly kicked and punched by an unknown man without warning, according to a VPD release. Bystanders intervened and the suspect fled westbound on West Georgia Street. The woman did not suffer physical injuries.
Vancouver Police arrested a suspect in that case on November 2 during proactive patrols near Main Street and East Hastings Street.
Two arrests in four days
Both incidents resulted in arrests within days. The VPD's November 5 release framed the paramedic attack as a second stranger assault in the downtown core in less than a week.
