  • Budget 2026 forecasts a $13.3 billion deficit

Finance Minister Brenda Bailey’s budget forecast a $13.3 billion deficit for 2026-27. It raised the lowest income tax rate from 5% to 5.6%, raised the speculation and vacancy tax from 3% to 4%, and planned 15,000 fewer public sector jobs over three years, the CBC reported.

  • The DRIPA bill will not decide whether the government stays in power

Mike Farnworth, the minister who manages government business in the legislature, said a bill to pause parts of DRIPA would not come that week. He said that when it came, its defeat would not bring down the government. The Tyee reported that Vancouver-Strathcona MLA Joan Phillip had said she would not support pausing parts of the law, and that Farnworth said the government would not have enough votes on its own.
