History and past elections
1933: the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation enters B.C. politics
The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, the party the NDP grew from, ran in its first B.C. election in 1933 and won 7 seats with 31.5% of the vote, The Tyee reported.
1961: the New Democratic Party of B.C. is formed
In October 1961, at a convention in Vancouver, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation joined with organized labour and took the name New Democratic Party. Robert Strachan stayed on as leader.

1972: first NDP government
Dave Barrett led the NDP to its first provincial win in 1972, with 38 of 55 seats. The party lost power in 1975.

1991 and 1996: two wins in a row
Mike Harcourt led the party back to power in 1991 with 51 of 75 seats. Glen Clark won again in 1996 with 39 of 75 seats, the first time the NDP won two B.C. elections in a row.

2001: reduced to two seats
The NDP under Ujjal Dosanjh won two seats in the 2001 election.

2017: minority government under John Horgan
The NDP won two fewer seats than the Liberals in 2017 but formed a minority government with the support of three Green Party members.

2020: majority government
The NDP won 57 seats with 898,384 valid votes, 47.69% of the total, in the 2020 election.
2022: David Eby becomes leader
David Eby became leader with no opponent left in the race, after the party disqualified Anjali Appadurai. He replaced John Horgan as premier.

2024: a one-seat majority
The NDP won 47 of 93 seats with 944,579 valid votes, 44.87% of the total. The Conservative Party won 44 seats.
2025 convention
By the party’s own account, members at its November 2025 convention supported Eby’s leadership with more than 82% and elected former MLA Aman Singh as party president.
Early election called
Eby called an election for October 24, 2026, two years ahead of schedule, and a by-election set for September 26 in Abbotsford-Mission was cancelled.
