From federal office to city council
Erskine-Smith represented the Beaches-East York federal riding as a Liberal MP for 10 years before resigning in June 2026. He grew up in the community, attending Bowmore Elementary and Malvern Collegiate. He entered the council race just before the late August registration deadline.
The Ward 19 seat opened when incumbent Brad Bradford left council to run for mayor. Bradford lost to Olivia Chow in Monday's mayoral race.
Beach Metro Community News reported Erskine-Smith saying he and Chow had worked together when he was in federal office: "Olivia Chow and I have worked together in the past when I was housing minister... we set politics aside to get things done."
What he plans to do as councillor
Erskine-Smith told Beach Metro Community News his main priorities are housing and transit. "Across the city, we need the city building on housing, better transit, faster, more reliable transit," he said.
He described his goal as being "a hyper-responsive councillor" for local needs.
