About Nate Erskine-Smith

Nate Erskine-Smith appears on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Councillor in Ward 19 Beaches-East York. A certified candidate is one whose nomination the City Clerk has accepted. The list shows the nomination date as August 19, 2026 and the campaign website nateerskinesmith.ca. Parliament’s record gives his name as the Honourable Nathaniel Erskine-Smith.

The House of Commons record for the Honourable Nathaniel Erskine-Smith lists him as the Member of Parliament for Beaches-East York in four terms: from October 19, 2015 to October 20, 2019, from October 21, 2019 to September 19, 2021, from September 20, 2021 to April 27, 2025, and from April 28, 2025 to July 7, 2026. The same record lists him as a Liberal in each of those Parliaments and as Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities from December 20, 2024 to May 13, 2025. Toronto council candidates stand without a party, so the Liberal affiliation belongs to his past role. CBC News reports that Prime Minister Mark Carney dropped him from cabinet in May 2025.

CBC News reported on August 19, 2026 that he registered at City Hall that morning and said in an emailed statement that Mayor Olivia Chow had asked him to join her team. CBC’s page also links its own earlier reports that he lost the Ontario Liberal Party nomination in Scarborough Southwest, appealed, and that a party panel dismissed the appeal. voche.me read those headlines on CBC’s page and did not open the stories.

His campaign website, the campaign’s own statement, says he trusts Mayor Chow’s leadership, and lists housing, the waterfront and climate, and city services as the big issues. His policy page lists gentle density in neighbourhoods, mid-rise housing on avenues, more non-market housing, tenant protections, faster streetcars, a lower TTC fare cap, opposition to expanding Billy Bishop Airport, a community discussion on reimagining Woodbine Beach, and property tax increases tied to inflation, a commitment it credits to the Chow administration.

The Local’s candidate tracker says he is endorsed by the Toronto & York Region Labour Council. TTCriders’ Ward 19 page records a Yes from him on all 18 of its transit questions. Build Canada lists him among the candidates who had not answered its questionnaire. Beach Metro printed his written answers on September 22, 2026, and Beach Metro lists him among the 12 candidates who confirmed they will attend its October 5 meet-and-greet.

What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on October 4, 2026: the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates and Members of Council page, the City Clerk’s 2022 declaration of results, the House of Commons roles page for Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, three pages of his campaign website (home, Policy and Share Your Ideas), CBC News’ report of August 19, 2026, three Beach Metro pieces (the Q&A and two reports of August 19), The Local’s Ward 19 tracker, Build Canada’s Ward 19 page, TTCriders’ Ward 19 page, The Green Line’s Ward 19 profile and its list of ward debates, and two further Beach Metro pieces on the race. His past public role is stated from the House of Commons record. Every statement taken from his campaign website or from his own answers is written as his own account.

Ward context. The City’s Members of Council page lists Brad Bradford as the Ward 19 Beaches-East York councillor. The City’s list of certified candidates shows him as a candidate for Mayor, and The Local, The Green Line and Beach Metro each report that he is running for mayor and not for the ward seat, so none of the 13 Ward 19 candidates is a sitting councillor. The 13 on the City’s list are Syeda Jaana Ali, James Dann, Nate Erskine-Smith, Fatima Ibrahimi, Natalie Johnson, Kevin Morrison, Karsten Riedel, Mohammad Shabani, Adam Smith, Austin Vieira, Jeff Wahl, Devin Wilkins and Jennie Worden. The City Clerk’s 2022 declaration of results for Ward 19 Beaches-East York lists 7 candidates: Brad Bradford (15,169 votes, elected), Jennie Worden (6,291), Adam Smith (1,902), Steven Thompson (1,735), Frank Marra (1,460), Donna Braniff (702) and Sébastien Auger (469). Of the 13 candidates, the Clerk’s 2022 Ward 19 table names two, Worden and Smith, and The Local says each of them ran there in 2022, in second and third place. No other 2026 Ward 19 candidate appears in that table. Build Canada’s Ward 19 page lists James Dann, Mohammad Shabani, Adam Smith, Austin Vieira and Jennie Worden as the 5 candidates who answered its questionnaire. TTCriders’ page shows answers to its 18 questions from 7 candidates (Ali, Dann, Erskine-Smith, Shabani, Smith, Wahl and Worden) and no response from the other 6. Beach Metro printed written answers from 11 of the 13 candidates on September 22, 2026. A candidate forum for Ward 19 was listed for September 28, 2026 at 5 Massey Square, organised by The Neighbourhood Organization, Don Valley Community Legal Services and the Taylor-Massey Oakridge Community Response Team, and Beach Metro lists a meet-and-greet at Beach United Church on October 5, 2026 that 12 candidates (all but Fatima Ibrahimi) confirmed they will attend. A listing records an invitation, and voche.me found no report of who took part in the forum.

Gaps. No City council role applies to him, so no City decisions search was run, and no vote of his in Parliament is cited. The City Clerk’s 2022 results have no entry under his name. The CBC page headlines about the Ontario Liberal nomination and its appeal were read and the stories behind them were not, so voche.me gives no detail on what he alleged or what the panel decided. His Instagram profile opened and returned thumbnails with no post text, so nothing from it is used. His X, Facebook, YouTube and Substack links were not opened. The Local’s Labour Council endorsement is that outlet’s statement and was not checked with the council. The questionnaire has not been sent.
