Mayoral candidate Brad Bradford announced on October 7 that he would remove 12 kilometres of priority bus lanes on four Scarborough roads if elected, CTV News reported. Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue lanes would return to general traffic. Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue lanes would convert to high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, which restrict access to vehicles with more than one occupant.

The Eglinton Avenue East bus lanes would remain. Bradford said those carry more buses than any other road in Scarborough, according to CTV News.

Why Bradford says the lanes should go

Bradford said the lanes were first intended as a temporary measure while the city waited for the Eglinton East LRT, according to CTV News. CTV News reported that the $4.65 billion light rail line has not secured funding and that Ontario's transportation minister said months ago it is not on the province's list of priorities. Bradford said he would make a personal push to Queen's Park and Ottawa for funding within his first 100 days as mayor, with a goal of getting construction underway by 2030.

His reason for converting two corridors to HOV lanes: "We're going to convert the lanes on Kingston and Morningside to HOV lanes to help parents who are driving their kids to soccer practice or to school."

The Chow campaign response

Chow's campaign said her administration had already planned to remove the Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue lanes once the Scarborough Busway opened, CTV News reported. The campaign also noted that Bradford introduced a 2020 motion at the TTC Board calling for the fast-tracking of bus-priority measures.

Olivia Chow's campaign separately announced on October 7 that 40 affordable housing projects have generated 37,000 jobs since 2023, with 51 projects currently under construction representing over 15,000 rental homes, and said the work would support 40,000 jobs across the region.

Transit advocates respond

TTCriders director Andrew Pulsifer told CTV News: "Removing successful bus lanes would mean deliberately making transit slower for thousands of Scarborough riders." The group said the lanes form part of a continuous corridor used by thousands of daily riders.

Voting dates

Brad Bradford's transit position and Olivia Chow's responses are part of their platforms in the mayor's race. Advance voting is open until October 11. Election day is October 26. To find voting places, visit the City of Toronto's elections page.
