Nine candidates are competing for the Ward 6 Stittsville councillor seat after incumbent Coun. Glen Gower chose not to seek re-election, CTV News reported on October 20.
CTV News reporter Leah Larocque reported that road priorities, transit reliability and the pace of infrastructure investment are the central issues in the race. The ward's population has grown to about 56,000 residents, according to CTV, making it one of Ottawa's fastest-growing communities.
The candidates
CTV News identified nine candidates in the race: Chelsea Walton, Mani Sharma, Sheetal Narwal, Tanya Hein, Theresa Qadri, Kevin Hua, Marie-Ange Yindaki Ahinful, Paul Meek and Devin Michael Fitzgerald O'Brien.
CTV reported that Chelsea Walton has the endorsement of outgoing councillor Glen Gower. Walton told CTV that transit services are unreliable and that people who can drive have stopped using the bus. She said the ward needs to rebuild trust with OC Transpo to bring ridership back up.
Roads and infrastructure
CTV reported that one dispute in the race is whether improvements to Carp Road or Robert Grant Avenue should come first. A planned widening of Carp Road is set to begin in spring 2027, according to CTV.
Devin Michael Fitzgerald O'Brien told CTV: "Instead of letting developers like Minto and Caivan Homes build their subdivisions without building infrastructure, what we need is to actually build the infrastructure that everyone in our area needs."
Mani Sharma told CTV: "Those houses are just going (up), going (up). But for infrastructure, nothing has been done. You can see the roads, Main Street. You can see like it needs to be redone."
How candidates set themselves apart
Sheetal Narwal told CTV: "People are asking for change. Continuity has not worked for Stittsville in the past decades, and it will not. It's going to give the same results which we have been getting, which is technically just consultation and wait and no delivery and no results."
Kevin Hua told CTV that if elected he would be the first city councillor born in the 21st century, and that he sees this as an opportunity for the community to bring new voices to city council.
Marie-Ange Yindaki Ahinful told CTV: "I'm the only bilingual one. So that's good for me to represent the French here in city. So, the francophone people can feel like they have a space here in Stittsville."
