Toronto police charged a 33-year-old Brampton driver on October 30 with careless driving causing death after a dump truck struck and killed a 44-year-old traffic agent at Millwood Road and Overlea Boulevard in Thorncliffe Park the previous morning. Global News confirmed the driver was working as a sub-contractor for Metrolinx, which is building the Ontario Line through the area.
The collision happened on October 29 at around 9:02 a.m. A Kenworth dump truck struck the traffic agent, and life-saving measures were performed at the scene. The traffic agent died there.
The Metrolinx connection
Multiple sources confirmed to Global News that the dump truck driver worked for a third-party company contracted by Metrolinx. A Metrolinx spokesperson said the agency's thoughts are with those affected and that further information would follow in coordination with Toronto Police.
Ward 15 Councillor Rachel Chernos Lin, whose ward covers Thorncliffe Park, said in a statement that her office had repeatedly raised concerns about truck movement and construction-related traffic around the Ontario Line. Her candidate page is at /on/toronto-2026/candidates/rachel-chernos-lin.
"It is imperative that we understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident," Chernos Lin said. "We will be pushing for an urgent review of what additional measures can be implemented to improve safety at this and other nearby intersections."
A second incident near the same project
This is not the first time a truck connected to the Ontario Line has been involved in a serious collision. In February 2025, another dump truck driven by a Metrolinx sub-contractor seriously injured a woman near Pape Avenue and Mortimer Avenue.
Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria told Global News that several safety measures were put in place after that 2025 incident. Councillor Paula Fletcher, who represents the ward where the 2025 collision occurred, said those measures were not enough.
"I think those safety standards have been relaxed and they need to be tightened up so this never happens again," Fletcher told Global News.
Sarkaria said the ministry is cooperating with police and would review what happened and put in place any further procedures needed to prevent future incidents.
The charge
The careless driving causing death charge has not been tested in court. No court has ruled on it. Toronto Police have not released the name of the person charged.
