About Weidong Pei

Weidong Pei appears on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Toronto District School Board in Ward 4. A certified candidate is one whose nomination the City Clerk has accepted. The list shows the nomination date as May 4, 2026 and a campaign website, weidongpei.ca.

A Toronto District School Board poster for 2024-25 reads “Your School Trustee Weidong Pei, Trustee, Ward 12, Willowdale”. The City Clerk’s declaration of results for October 24, 2022 lists Weidong Pei first among 3 candidates for Toronto District School Board Ward 12, with 7,023 votes, marked elected. The second place went to Alexander Brown with 6,791 votes. The 3 declared totals add up to 15,092 votes, so Pei’s share was 46.5 percent and Brown’s 45.0 percent, calculated by voche.me from those figures. That 2022 Ward 12 is the old Willowdale ward named on the board’s poster. voche.me did not find a start date on the board’s own pages and gives none.

TDSB wards changed for 2026. Ward 4 covers City wards 6 and 18, which the candidates’ own sites call York Centre and Willowdale. His campaign site names the ward as Ward 4, York Centre and Willowdale. The 2022 result belongs to the old Ward 12 and is not treated as the same place as the new Ward 4. The TDSB’s trustee wards page says that during provincial supervision the powers of trustees rest with the provincially appointed Supervisor, that trustees have no official duties with the board at this time, and that this also applies to trustees elected in October 2026.

His campaign website says he is a general dental practitioner, holds a DDS and a PhD from the University of Toronto, and describes his 2022 win as an upset over an 8-year incumbent and board chair. The City Clerk’s results show Brown second, and they do not say whether he was the incumbent or the chair. The campaign’s credentials, its description of Brown and its record claims are its own statements, and voche.me did not check them against the University of Toronto, or the board’s records.

In a column for the Toronto Sun dated September 16, 2025, signed as a TDSB trustee, he wrote that supervision “is not the danger some of my colleagues claim it to be” and called it “the long-overdue solution”. He also wrote in the column that relieving trustees of their duties is “the only way to bring accountability back” to the board. The column is his own opinion.

What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on October 4, 2026: the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates, a TDSB poster naming him Ward 12 trustee, the City Clerk’s 2022 declaration of results, his campaign website (home, about and platform pages), his public X profile, his Toronto Sun column of September 16, 2025, his Know Your Vote T.O. page and the TDSB’s trustee wards page. His trustee role comes from the board’s own poster and the City Clerk’s results. The record claims on his campaign pages are attributed to the campaign in the sentences that carry them.

The 2022 result belongs to the ward as it was then, the old Ward 12 (Willowdale), and is not treated as the same place as the new Ward 4. His X profile shows a pinned post dated May 4, which matches the nomination date on the City’s list.

Gaps. No board minutes or recorded vote were opened, so no vote is attributed to him, and the campaign’s claims about reversing the admissions lottery and other board decisions were not checked against minutes. His Know Your Vote T.O. page lists a website and the X account, and its four questions are marked “Awaiting submission”. The questionnaire has not been sent.
