Local government concerns about Bill M216

The Nanaimo News Bulletin reported on December 4, 2025 that Nanaimo city council would send its concerns about Bill M216 to the Province. City staff said local governments would have to accept reports from regulated professionals in most cases. The paper reported that the Union of B.C. Municipalities and the Planning Institute of B.C. had raised concerns about local control, public safety, liability and consultation.

Candidate or party response

In a letter to council quoted by the paper, Anderson said regulated professionals are already accountable under the Professional Governance Act, and that cities would no longer spend months checking certified work again.

Verified status and limits

On April 9, 2026 the housing minister said Anderson had asked the committee to stop its work on the bill. The bill was removed from the order paper on April 20, 2026.
