Homes young families can afford, faster approvals and the housing society's debt moved off the books
Langley Strong's platform promises to champion housing options young families and seniors can afford, to speed up approvals and keep needless costs off new homes, to encourage multi-generational housing where appropriate, and to move the Township's housing society and the $177 million borrowed through it to an established non-profit housing provider once its buildings are full. It promises complete communities with services built alongside homes. It names no number of homes.
HOUSING AND ZONING
Langley Strong on housing
The platform has no pillar titled housing. Its housing promises sit in the pillars on children, seniors, taxpayers and safety. Pillar 5, Respect for Our Children and Young People, promises to champion housing options young families can afford, measured by whether the children who grew up in Langley can make a life there, to speed up approvals, to keep needless costs off new homebuyers and to encourage multi-generational housing options where appropriate.
Pillar 1, Respect for Taxpayers, promises to move the Township's housing society, and the $177 million of debt behind it, to an established non-profit housing provider once the buildings are finished and full, and to end the exemption that the platform says lets the Township and its society escape the Township's own tenant protection bylaw. Progress for Langley's site said the opposition would end the Langley Housing Trust before it completed a unit; that is Progress for Langley's own account.
Pillar 8, Respect for Our Safety, promises to plan neighbourhoods as complete communities with services built alongside homes, and to require traffic calming and sidewalks with new construction. Pillar 2 promises to plan every neighbourhood with local residents and to publish a price tag and funding plan for every community project. Pillar 6 promises housing options that let seniors stay in their community.
