Maria Voutsinas is running for city councillor in Ward 14, Toronto-Danforth, in a seat open for the first time since 2003.

Voutsinas told Frequency News on 8 October that she is drawing on more than two decades of advocacy and neighbourhood roots as she campaigns on affordability, transit safety, and a City Hall that listens more closely to residents. Frequency News published the interview on 8 October.

The seat came open after councillor Paula Fletcher announced she would not seek re-election. Fletcher won the ward in 2003 and has held it ever since. She told Toronto media it was time, in her own words, to pass the torch to the next generation, according to Frequency News.

Voutsinas told Frequency News she has served for more than 20 years as executive director of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada, working from an office at Toronto City Hall and advocating on behalf of what she described as around 800 independent ethnic-media partners across Canada. She also worked as a journalist and editor, and previously in financial services. She holds a Specialised Honours BA in Political Science from York University, according to Frequency News.

She told Frequency News the issues she hears most about while knocking on doors are housing affordability, construction and congestion, TTC reliability and safety, and the rising cost of living. "I know how the system works and how to turn advocacy into action," Frequency News quoted from her campaign material. Her campaign material also names safety on public transit as a priority, according to Frequency News.

Voutsinas also told Frequency News she is a founding member of the Danforth Greektown Renewal Committee and has served on a parent council executive.
