Weizhen Tang appears on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Mayor. A certified candidate is one whose nomination the City Clerk has accepted. The list shows the nomination date as May 5, 2026 and gives the website weizhentang.today. That website carries his name and describes him as a wealth management expert. Its home page does not mention the mayoral campaign.
The Local reports that he ran for mayor in 2010 and in 2023. The City’s declaration of results for the 2023 mayoral by-election lists Weizhen Tang with 125 votes, in 72nd place of 102 candidates. The Local says he placed 20th of 40 candidates in 2010. voche.me did not find the City’s 2010 results.
The Capital Markets Tribunal, the Ontario body that hears securities cases, records in its reasons of April 21, 2016 that on October 30, 2012, after a 25-day jury trial, Tang was found guilty of fraud over $5,000. On February 1, 2013 he was sentenced to six years in prison. The Court of Appeal for Ontario dismissed his appeals of the conviction and the sentence in 2015. The Tribunal then ordered that he be permanently banned from trading or acquiring securities, from acting as a registrant, and from acting as an officer or director of a company or investment fund manager.
On September 18, 2024 the Ontario Securities Commission announced that he had been charged with breaching that order. The Commission alleges that between February 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021 he accepted funds from, and traded on behalf of, two Ontario investors, and that the trading lost them more than $150,000. This is an allegation. The release says he was due in court on October 4, 2024 and carries no response from him. voche.me searched for the outcome and did not find one.
His website disagrees with the regulator. It says the Commission froze his accounts in 2009 before any trial, calls this regulatory overreach and racialized enforcement, and links court filings dated December 1, 2025 that voche.me did not open. These are his own statements. The Tribunal’s reasons record that the Commission’s order followed his criminal conviction. The website also calls him “The Chinese Warren Buffett” and says his investment approach has produced verified returns of 1 percent weekly. voche.me has not checked these claims against any source. The Ontario Securities Commission warned the public in 2019 not to invest with him or his companies.
