Jon Burnside appears on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Councillor in Ward 16 Don Valley East. A certified candidate is one whose nomination the City Clerk has accepted. The list shows the nomination date as June 2, 2026 and the campaign website jonburnside.ca.
The City’s Members of Council page lists Councillor Jon Burnside for Ward 16 Don Valley East. His City profile, which ends with the line “Information provided by the Councillor”, says he was elected in 2022 and that he was City Councillor for the previous Ward 26 (Don Valley West) from 2014 to 2018. It lists his committees and boards as the General Government Committee, North York Community Council and the Housing Services Corporation, and the Wexford Heights Business Improvement Area. The profile page shows July 31, 2026 as its modification date. CBC News reported in 2022 that he lost the 2018 race to fellow incumbent Jaye Robinson after the province cut the council from 47 to 25 wards.
The City Clerk’s declaration of results for the October 24, 2022 general election lists Jon Burnside first among 11 candidates for Councillor in Ward 16 Don Valley East, with 8,147 votes, marked elected. Stephen Ksiazek was second with 3,778. The 11 declared totals add up to 18,234 votes, so his share was 44.7 percent and Ksiazek’s was 20.7 percent, calculated by voche.me from those figures.
His City profile, text he supplied, says he served 10 years as a Toronto Police officer, started a healthy food delivery service that he operated in the Greater Toronto Area for 14 years until his election, and led the creation of a free house league hockey program in Flemingdon Park. voche.me did not check these with the police service. His campaign website, the campaign’s own statement, adds that he was Manager, Strategic Initiatives at the City of Toronto, where it says he led the City’s encampment office, and lists board and committee memberships with community groups.
The Local’s candidate tracker, written by that outlet’s journalists, says that this term he voted against the RapidTO Surface Network Transit Plan, and voted against asking the province to let people who are unhoused receive the shelter part of their benefits. It also says that in the 2024 budget he moved to ask the TTC to consider raising fares, which failed, and that he passed a motion to ask the City to look into maximum fines after a construction bin blocked a bike lane. These are The Local’s accounts. The City’s decisions site refused the request (HTTP 403), so voche.me did not read the City’s record of any of these votes and cites none.
His campaign site describes a record in the 2022 to 2026 term and says he “was not a member of Mayor Chow’s inner circle”. It states that Council approved his motion that makes Canada’s flag the only country’s flag flown at City Hall. Those are the campaign’s own statements. TTCriders’ page of Ward 16 candidate responses shows No Response beside his name for each of its 18 questions.
