WHAT THIS BODY DOES
What you are electing
The City of Surrey says the mayor is the head and chief executive officer of the City, leads the city council and has powers from the Community Charter. Every voter in Surrey chooses one mayor from the same list.
The City lists the mayor’s powers: to provide leadership to Council, including by recommending bylaws, resolutions and measures; to communicate information to Council; to set standing committees and appoint councillors to them; to look at the conduct of municipal officers; to return a bylaw, resolution or proceeding of Council for reconsideration; and to run and keep order at Council meetings.
The mayor and eight councillors sit on Council. The City says that because Council has nine members, a quorum is five.
