His campaign says he reported for The Surrey Leader for 22 years and left journalism in 2017 for recovery work. He has held no public office. A researched record of Kevin Diakiw's Independent candidacy in Surrey-White Rock. He is a former community-newspaper journalist and has held no public office, so voche.me found no legislature record, council minutes or voting record to review. The one pledge listed is in his own words.
On dates without a confirmed appearance the public schedule is unknown; the candidate may still have activities that day. This static page changes only when its research is updated.
01 / Introduction
About Kevin Diakiw
Elections BC lists Kevin Diakiw as an Independent candidate in Surrey-White Rock. The list was read on 2026-10-03 and shows no party. Peace Arch News reported on October 2, 2026 that four candidates had announced runs in the district: Conservative MLA Trevor Halford, former White Rock mayor Darryl Walker for the BC NDP, Christine Kinnie for the BC Greens, and Diakiw.
His campaign website says he has lived in the community for 30 years, raised his family there and spent 22 years as a journalist. It says he worked for The Surrey Leader and covered city hall, policing, the courts, health care, addiction and mental health. Peace Arch News calls him a former Surrey Now-Leader journalist. His campaign says his series Equal Opportunity Destroyer followed mental illness through the lives of patients and their families.
The campaign says he left journalism in 2017, became a recovery coach, and now trains others to do that work. StudioX News, relaying the campaign's statement, says he co-founded Still Here Recovery, based in Surrey. Peace Arch News describes him as a local business owner. voche.me has not checked the company or his dates with a business registry.
Peace Arch News reports that the Surrey Homelessness and Housing Society named him a Hero of the Homeless in 2017 for his reporting. The society's 2018 awards story in the Surrey Now-Leader lists Kevin Diakiw, a retired veteran journalist with the Surrey Leader, among the 2017 winners.
His campaign site says he is running without a party so that he has no party whip and can back a good idea from anyone. The campaign says addiction and recovery reform, family-doctor access, emergency-room wait times, public safety, housing and affordability are its focus. StudioX News reports that the full platform has not been released and that details will follow.

Vote without a party whip
His campaign site says he runs as an Independent with no party whip, will back a good idea no matter who brings it, will oppose a bad one no matter who owns it, and will test every vote by whether it is good for Surrey-White Rock.

Evidence reviewed
This is a statement on his own About page. It names no bill, rule or date, and an Independent has no party to direct a vote.

Announces Independent campaign in Surrey-White Rock
Relays his campaign statement: 22 years of reporting, a move to recovery work in 2017, a focus on addiction and recovery reform, health care, public safety, housing and affordability, and a full platform to follow.
Names him with Conservative MLA Trevor Halford, the BC NDP's Darryl Walker and the BC Greens' Christine Kinnie, and quotes his release on why he is running as an Independent.
Homelessness society awards, with 2017 winners listed
Lists Kevin Diakiw, a retired veteran journalist with the Surrey Leader, among the previous year's winners. Peace Arch News ties the 2017 Hero of the Homeless award to the candidate.
Sources checked October 3, 2026. Official records establish decisions; campaign material establishes stated positions; reporting adds investigation and context. None alone establishes every claim.
The campaign says its full platform will follow, and none was published on 2026-10-03. His campaign site names no social media account, and the accounts voche.me opened under his name carried nothing that ties them to the candidate: a Facebook page and an Instagram page showed no identifying text, and X answered with HTTP 402. None was used. His employment as a Surrey Leader reporter, his 22 years in the job and his departure in 2017 come from his campaign site and from Peace Arch News, which relays his release; voche.me has not seen a record from the newspaper. The campaign says his project The Faces of Fentanyl, made with photographer Evan Seal, received national recognition at the 2017 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards. voche.me did not find the awarding body's list of winners, so the award is left out of the biography. A 2017 provincial Ma Murray award listing a Kevin Diakiw for a Surrey Leader fentanyl feature turned up in the search, and no page opened ties that entry to the candidate. Still Here Recovery is described only in the campaign's statement, and its website loads through a script that shows no text, so its ownership and his role were not verified. No Elections BC disclosure of campaign finances, no endorsements and no all-candidates meeting for Surrey-White Rock were found on this date. The general web search tool had reached its limit, so the name search used the search pages of the Surrey Now-Leader, Peace Arch News and StudioX News directly.

What voche.me has checked
Evidence reviewed on 2026-10-03: the Elections BC candidate list and key dates page, the campaign website (home, About and Contact pages), StudioX News, Peace Arch News and the Surrey Now-Leader, which also carried the October 2 report.
The campaign's platform is not published yet, so the pledge in this record is the one in his own words. His social media accounts could not be tied to the candidate and were not used. The general web search tool had reached its limit, so the name search used the news sites' own search pages. An empty section records what voche.me did not find on this date.
