The City of Ottawa’s list of certified candidates shows Julia Fortey’s nomination for trustee of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board in Zone 2 dated May 29, 2026. The City’s open data file shows no withdrawal. The City list gives no website or social media account for her. The other candidate in the zone is Paul Crawford. CBC News reported on August 24, 2026 that she is one of only two current trustees seeking re-election, and that four other current trustees are running for City Council.
The board’s releases say that its trustees selected her at a special meeting on October 15, 2024 after eight candidates presented their qualifications, that she was sworn in on October 29, 2024, and that she replaced Alysha Aziz, who resigned in July 2024. Her term ends on November 14, 2026. CBC News reported that Aziz resigned for personal reasons. A board document of November 12, 2024 lists her on the Audit Committee for a two-year term to 2026, the Policy Review Committee and the Advocacy Strategy Committee.
CBC News reported that on June 11, 2025, after two nights of discussion as a committee of the whole, seven trustees voted in favour of the 2025-2026 budget as staff had presented it, and that Fortey was among them. The budget included $18.1 million in cuts. The CBC update says the board approved the budget on June 17, 2025 with six votes in favour, three against and one abstention, and it does not name who voted each way, so voche.me does not attribute that vote to her. The board’s page says that since June 27, 2025 the board has been under supervision by the Minister of Education, so that decisions normally made by trustees are made by the appointed Supervisor.
The board’s release says she holds a Master’s in Education from the University of Prince Edward Island, a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Carleton University and an Architectural Technologist diploma from Algonquin College, has more than twelve years of experience at Algonquin College where she is an Academic Administrator, and is a parent and community member in Zone 2. The release says she sits on Algonquin College’s Board of Governors, and the college’s approved minutes of October 27, 2025 list a Julia Fortey as present among the governors. voche.me did not check her degrees or her job with the schools or the college. The sources read hold no complaint or allegation about her.
