The City of Ottawa’s list of certified candidates shows Alan Riddell’s nomination for trustee of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board in Zone 11 dated August 21, 2026. The City’s open data file shows no withdrawal. The other candidates in the zone are Brendan Ray and Jason Glover. The City list gives him a campaign website. CTV News Ottawa lists him in its guide of September 9, 2026.
His campaign website says he was born in Ottawa and attended Ottawa public schools, and holds a B.A. and an LL.B. from the University of Toronto and a degree from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris. It says he practises employment, human rights and public law in English and French, is a senior partner in a prominent Ottawa law firm that it does not name, and has appeared before several courts and tribunals, including as lead counsel in a Supreme Court of Canada decision on the privacy rights of federal public servants under the Access to Information Act. The site gives no case name. It also says he is a co-founder and vice-chair of Young Voices Can!, a charity that encourages dialogue among high school students, and vice president and a board member of Samawada, a charity that builds village wells in East Africa. voche.me did not check these statements.
The site describes the board of the past as marked by infighting, over-spending and poor management, and says a newly elected board must prove itself competent, balanced-budget minded and collaborative. It says that as a trustee he would use his advocacy skills to persuade the Minister of Education to restore full authority to elected trustees, and that he wants to halt the move of students from Ottawa public schools to private and Catholic schools by restoring parent confidence through a back-to-basics approach, while balancing the budget without sacrifices that affect teachers, students and parents.
The board’s page says that since June 27, 2025 the board has been under supervision by the Minister of Education, and that decisions normally made by trustees are made by the appointed Supervisor, Robert Plamondon. The sources read hold no complaint or allegation about him.
