The BC Green Party announced her candidacy on September 29, 2026, with Andrew Appleton in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, at the same time as a plan for renters. Victoria News and Victoria Buzz reported it. The party release quotes her: "As a reporter in the Capital Regional District, I have come to understand the unique nature and scale of the challenges facing this area."
In the 2024 election Darlene Rotchford of the BC NDP won Esquimalt-Colwood with 15,238 votes (51.47 percent). John Wilson of the Conservative Party had 8,652 votes (29.22 percent) and Camille Currie of the BC Green Party had 5,716 votes (19.31 percent). voche.me searched the 2024 statement of votes for the surname Coles and found no match.
Her reporting is on the public record. Capital Daily prints her byline as "Sidney Coles, Local Journalism Initiative" on articles from 2024 and 2025, including a June 7, 2024 investigation of the Capital Regional District's biosolids plan. CHEK News carried her Capital Daily stories in 2024. Ricochet Media lists her articles from 2024 to November 2025 and describes her as a writer and human rights advocate. The party's candidate page says she has freelanced since 2021 and also wrote for Canada's National Observer, the Watershed Sentinel, the Toronto Star and the Hamilton Spectator. voche.me could not read the National Observer page and has not checked the other outlets.
The party's candidate page also says she was External Communications Manager for the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs, worked on programs for the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Status of Women, worked with Doctors Without Borders in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and completed PhDs at the University of Toronto in Comparative Literature (2008) and in Applied Psychology and Human Development (2024). These are the campaign's statements. voche.me has not checked them with the employers, the ministries or the university.

Opposes tanker risk from a proposed new pipeline
On Bluesky she told readers to tell Premier Eby that a bitumen spill risk on the tanker route of a proposed new pipeline is not worth the risk to the whales, orcas, fish, otters, herring and shore birds of the Esquimalt-Colwood shoreline.
Evidence & next checks
Evidence reviewed
The post is hers. It does not name the pipeline, a provincial measure, a cost or a date.
What still needs checking
Which pipeline does she mean, and which provincial decision would she change?
Party plan: restart the Community Housing Fund and Indigenous Housing Fund
The party's renter policy brief says the BC Greens will immediately restart the Community Housing Fund and Indigenous Housing Fund, with a goal of building and protecting 26,000 housing units per year. The party release of September 29, 2026 announced the plan with her as a new candidate.
Evidence & next checks
Evidence reviewed
The release quotes Emily Lowan on the plan and names Sidney Coles only as a new candidate. It does not quote her on it.
The party plan page says a Fair Share Act would make the few hundred richest people in British Columbia pay their fair share, and says it would raise more than $13 billion in revenue.
Evidence & next checks
Evidence reviewed
This is party text. It does not name Sidney Coles, and voche.me found no statement in her own words that repeats it. It gives no date.
voche.me found no elected public office held by her in the sources read on 2026-10-03, and so found no voting record to review. Her articles are journalism and earn no record point. No dated action that earns a record point was found.
No reviewed entries have been added to this section yet. This is a research gap, not a finding about the candidate.

Statement
Named as the party's Esquimalt-Colwood candidate
In the party release she said that as a reporter in the Capital Regional District she has come to understand the scale of the challenges facing the area, and that she wants to support Esquimalt and Colwood in continuing to be places where people and their families feel welcome, safe and able to thrive. Victoria News carried the same quote.
Bluesky post on the tanker route of a proposed pipeline
She posted a map of the tanker route of a proposed new pipeline and said a bitumen spill would affect the Esquimalt-Colwood shoreline for hundreds of years.
She criticized the Liberals and the BC NDP over a liveable, sustainable present and future, and wrote that $100M on a snap election could have been diverted to health care in BC.
She wrote that climate impacts do not respect borders or district boundaries, that a vote for the BC Greens is a vote for a liveable future, and that she is running in Esquimalt-Colwood.

BC Greens announce councillor, journalist as provincial candidates
Reports her candidacy with Andrew Appleton's, describes her as a journalist and quotes her.
An investigation she wrote, under the byline Sidney Coles, Local Journalism Initiative, into delays and health concerns around the Capital Regional District's biosolids plan. It is her work as a reporter, listed here as background.
Sources checked October 3, 2026. Official records establish decisions; campaign material establishes stated positions; reporting adds investigation and context. None alone establishes every claim.
No campaign website of her own was found. Her National Observer author page returned HTTP 403 and her LinkedIn page returned HTTP 999 to a direct read, so voche.me used nothing from either. Her Bluesky account is read through Bluesky's public data service because the profile page needs a script to show posts. The account is hers: its display name is Sidney Coles PhD, PhD, and she writes there "I’m running in Esquimalt-Colwood". voche.me read her posts from September 15 to October 2, 2026 and used only the three that state campaign positions. The pipeline post carries a map image and does not name the pipeline, so voche.me did not name it. The party's candidate page says she has two PhDs, worked for the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs, the Ontario ministries of Education and of the Status of Women, and Doctors Without Borders, and was a Rhodes Scholarship nominee. None of these was checked with the employer, the ministries or the university. Search results also credit her with journalism awards. voche.me did not open any awarding body's list, so it lists no award. Her public role: no seat in the legislature or on a council was found, so no minutes or voting record apply. Her Capital Daily articles cover Esquimalt and other municipalities. voche.me did not read them for statements by her, because they are news reports. The party plan page says a full platform is coming soon, so the party commitments here need a new check when it appears. The party's candidate page lists no events on 2026-10-03. No all-candidates meeting for Esquimalt-Colwood was found. The Times Colonist list of Vancouver Island candidates shows no publication date that voche.me could confirm, so it is used for the district list only. Campaign finances and endorsements were not reviewed. The questionnaire has not been sent.

What voche.me has checked
Evidence reviewed on 2026-10-03: the Elections BC candidate list and key dates page, the 2024 statement of votes, the party's candidate page, candidates list, plan page and its September 29, 2026 release, reports by Victoria News, Victoria Buzz and the Times Colonist, her author pages at Capital Daily, Ricochet Media and CHEK News, one Capital Daily article, her Substack profile and her public Bluesky posts.
No campaign website of her own was found. Her National Observer author page and her LinkedIn page returned errors to a direct read, so voche.me used nothing from them. An empty section records what voche.me did not find on this date.
