About Paul Kwon

Paul Kwon was elected to the Burnaby Board of Education on October 17, 2026. The City of Burnaby's count gives him 19,772 votes, the fifth-highest total of the 16 candidates for the seven trustee seats, and the City's chief election officer declared him elected on October 21, 2026. He ran with the Burnaby Citizens Association, whose seven trustee candidates took all seven seats.

Burnaby Now's 2022 candidate questionnaire shows him running for school board that year as an independent, and he named UBC as his workplace in it, as he does in 2026. The City's 2022 results list seven other people as elected.

In April 2026 the Indo-Canadian Voice quoted him as chair of the Burnaby District Parent Advisory Council, which asked the Province to pay the full $9.4 million cost of a labour arbitration award to Burnaby teachers. He said that if the Province did not, Burnaby students would pay through more cuts to classrooms and services.

By his own account, in the statement he gave the City and on the BCA's page, he works in finance and operations at the University of British Columbia, sits on the Senate of Simon Fraser University, coaches basketball and volleyball as a volunteer, and has served with Burnaby Family Life and the Burnaby Community Heritage Commission. voche.me has not checked these.

In the statement he gave the City, he named protecting student supports, planning school space as Burnaby grows, and making budget decisions openly and responsibly as his priorities. His promise tracker holds his own promises from that statement and from the Freshet News questionnaire, and the BCA platform's school commitments.

The Burnaby Citizens Association's 2026 platform has a section on public schools. It lists what the BCA says its trustees delivered and what they plan next. The BCA ran seven trustee candidates, and the City's count shows all seven elected.

Its plans for schools include pressing the Province to build schools for the number of students Burnaby expects, making the case for new schools at Brentwood West, Bainbridge Village and Brentwood East, asking for stable funding for learning supports, keeping the district's SOGI policy strong, setting rules for AI in schools, and growing the school meals program. The promise tracker lists each school commitment on the platform.

His work at UBC, his seat on the SFU Senate and his other community roles are his own account and have not been checked. A search of the SFU Senate's March 2026 minutes did not find his name. His Instagram and Facebook accounts showed only a page header to scripts, so no post was read. No statement from him after the 2026 vote was found.
