Joe Keithley was re-elected to Burnaby City Council on October 17, 2026. The City of Burnaby's count gives him 18,073 votes, the highest total of the 42 council candidates, and the City's chief election officer declared him elected on October 21, 2026. He ran with the Burnaby Citizens Association. Freshet News called him the top vote-getter in the council race.
Global News reported that he was elected to council in October 2018 as the only Burnaby Green Party council candidate to win. It also reported that he had run for the Greens in the 1996, 2001 and 2017 provincial elections, and had sought an NDP nomination in 2013. The City's 2022 results give him 11,383 votes, and Burnaby Now reported that this was the fifth-highest total. Freshet News reported in March 2026 that he left the Green Party and joined the BCA in December 2025. On the BCA's site he said that joining the BCA would let him better advance the policies and solutions the community deserves.
Global News described him in 2018 as the former frontman of the punk band D.O.A. The BC Entertainment Hall of Fame lists him as inducted in 2016, in music, and calls him best known as the leader of D.O.A.
The City's councillor page lists him as chair of the Environment Committee, a member of the Audit, Financial Management and Planning and Development committees, a member of the Metro Vancouver Water Committee and a director of the E-Comm board. By his own account, on that page and in his City statement, he started the Harmony For All program with the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society, and it has given musical instruments to more than 5,000 Burnaby children. voche.me has not checked this figure.
In the statement he gave the City, he wrote that his priorities include affordable housing, quality child care and helping the most vulnerable people in the community. The BCA's page says he often describes housing as a right, and he told Global News the same in 2018. His promise tracker holds the BCA platform's city commitments.
