# Vote Vancouver on childcare: capital plan money, public housing, school sites

Vote Vancouver would put more childcare money in the 2027 to 2030 capital plan, require non-profit childcare in all new public housing, press the Province on $10aDay childcare, audit underused public land for new spaces, and use school sites for childcare run by the Vancouver School Board.

## Affordable Childcare: what the Policy Priorities says

Vote Vancouver's childcare page is a list of ways to add affordable spaces. The first is money: the party would make a bigger childcare commitment in the city's 2027 to 2030 capital plan, the multi-year plan for buildings and infrastructure, to match what it says was pledged and left unused in the 2023 to 2026 plan. The party would require non-profit childcare in all new public housing. It would audit underused public buildings and land for more childcare spaces, including care with longer hours for parents who work unusual schedules, and modular childcare buildings on empty land. It would also give non-profit providers priority when the city leases its own spaces.

Schools feature in three items. The party would use school grounds when classes are out to offer affordable childcare run by the Vancouver School Board, add before- and after-school spaces where the rules can be met, and add pre-kindergarten childcare during school days in school board buildings. It would also press the Province to fund $10aDay childcare fully, a provincial program. Council approves the capital plan and controls zoning and city buildings, so it can act on money, space and housing rules. Licensing, fee subsidies and operating money for childcare are provincial, and school buildings belong to the School Board, so several items need others to agree.
