HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

## Public Washrooms and Supportive Housing: what the Kareem's Plan for a Better Vancouver says

Public washrooms come up more than once in the Vancouver Liberals' health section. The party says the city's streets and parks are covered with animal and human waste, and that Vancouver has the fewest public bathrooms of any major city in North America. It warns that the shortage could cause bigger public health problems when soccer fans arrive for the World Cup. Along with sending its new front-line workers to clean streets, it would build new public washrooms across the city.

The party joins washrooms to housing. It says public projects should give the largest possible social benefit, so every new supportive housing project in Vancouver would be required to include public bathrooms and showers open 24 hours a day for people who are unhoused. Supportive housing means homes that come with on-site help, such as health or social services.

The third item is about whether supportive housing gets built at all. The party says that under Mayor Ken Sim and ABC Vancouver, all types of new supportive housing construction have been banned. It calls this a cruel ban and says it would reverse it on its first day in office, so that seniors, veterans and people with disabilities get the support they need. The claim of a ban is the party's own description.

Council funds city facilities and decides where supportive housing is approved, so all three steps rest with City Council. Health services, treatment beds and drug policy belong to the Province and the federal government, and the platform does not say what it would ask of them.
