# OneCity: brighter streets, bin maps, a smart glasses ban and e-bike battery rules

OneCity says its ReLight Vancouver plan would light streets, parks, paths and bus stops in every neighbourhood and ban hostile architecture. It would restore public garbage bins, ban smart glasses in city change rooms and washrooms, and regulate sellers of unsafe e-bike batteries.

SAFE STREETS & PUBLIC SPACES FOR ALL

## Safe Streets & Public Spaces: what the Our Plans says

The second principle of OneCity's Progressive Public Safety Plan, published on September 25, 2026, is about streets, parks and city buildings. The points here are smaller and more physical than the crisis response items: lights, bins, recording devices and batteries. ReLight Vancouver would light streets, parks, pathways and bus stops in every neighbourhood. It would also ban hostile architecture on city-owned benches and shelters, meaning design that stops people from sitting or lying down, such as dividers on benches. A Clean Streets item would bring back reliable public garbage bins, expand recycling beyond downtown and publish a public map of bins.

Eyes Off would ban wearable recording devices, such as smart glasses, in city-run change rooms, washrooms and other municipal spaces. Charge Safe / Ride Safe would regulate businesses that sell unsafe e-bikes and batteries, which the party calls a leading cause of fire risk, and set safe operating rules for e-bikes and e-scooters. Connect Vancouver is a promise that people can walk, roll or scoot safely in any neighbourhood. Council controls city streets, city buildings and business licences, so most of these steps are its own. Park lighting and pool change rooms belong to the Park Board, and the battery trade-in program depends on the Province.

## Questions about safe streets & public spaces

<details>

<summary>What is ReLight Vancouver?

</summary>

ReLight Vancouver is OneCity's plan to light streets, parks, pathways and bus stops in every neighbourhood, and to ban hostile architecture, such as dividers that stop people lying on benches, on city-owned benches and shelters (OneCity Progressive Public Safety Plan, September 25, 2026).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Would OneCity ban smart glasses in Vancouver change rooms?

</summary>

Yes. Under a point it calls Eyes Off, OneCity would ban wearable recording devices such as smart glasses in city-run change rooms, washrooms and other municipal spaces. Change rooms at pools and community centres are run by the Park Board, so it would have to act too (OneCity Progressive Public Safety Plan).

</details>

<details>

<summary>What would OneCity do about e-bike battery fires?

</summary>

OneCity says it would regulate businesses that sell unsafe e-bikes and batteries, work with the Province on a battery trade-in program, and set safe operating standards for e-bikes and e-scooters. It calls the point Charge Safe / Ride Safe (OneCity Progressive Public Safety Plan, September 25, 2026).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does OneCity plan to bring back public garbage bins?

</summary>

Yes. OneCity's Clean Streets point would restore reliable public garbage bins, expand recycling beyond downtown and publish a public map of where the bins are (OneCity Progressive Public Safety Plan, September 25, 2026).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Who would carry out OneCity's safe streets plan?

</summary>

Mostly City Council, which owns the streets, benches and bus shelters and licenses businesses. The Park Board runs lighting and change rooms in parks, pools and community centres, and the Province would be the partner for a battery trade-in program (OneCity Progressive Public Safety Plan).
