# Vancouver Greens on health: mould rules for rentals, school food and cooling

The Green Party of Vancouver would update the Standards of Maintenance By-law so landlords must fix mould and water damage on time, provide cool and clean-air public spaces during heat and smoke, fund affordable recreation, and fill gaps in school food funding.

## Healthy City: what the Platform 2026 says

Page 29 of the Green Party of Vancouver's 2026 platform links health to housing, climate and food. One commitment would give every neighbourhood access to public spaces and buildings that stay safe during extreme heat, wildfire smoke and flooding, with more cooling and shade for the people most at risk. The party would also shape city plans around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a set of international goals on poverty, health, food and climate, which the Greens say would help the city win outside funding.

For renters, the Greens would update Vancouver's Standards of Maintenance By-law, the city rule that sets the minimum condition of rental homes. The new version would require landlords to fix mould, moisture, water damage and indoor air problems promptly, with stronger enforcement and tenant protection. Council writes and changes this bylaw itself. The party would also fund low-cost recreation programs and access to community facilities, and support walking and cycling as ways to stay active.

The last item concerns meals at school. The Greens would press the provincial and federal governments for a universal school food program that they pay for, and would have the city fill funding gaps when that money falls short. The platform credits city councillor Pete Fry with efforts to restore support for Vancouver School Board meal programs. School funding is set by the province, so the city's part would be advocacy plus any money Council chooses to add.

4. ### Standards of maintenance for healthy homes

5. ### Sustainable school food funding

The Greens would advocate for a universal school food program paid for by the provincial and federal governments, and have Vancouver fill funding gaps when that money falls short.
