## The aim of Affordable Living, in the party's words

> A city that works for everyone starts with affordability. We'll make it easier to find a home, get around, access services, and build a good life in the communities people love.

Affordable Living is the second part of the Green Party of Vancouver's 2026 platform, on pages 17 to 22. It opens with one proposal for the whole section: a Vancouver Affordability Index that would track real household costs against local incomes. The party says this data would guide decisions on housing, transportation, taxes and planning, and that city policies should be judged by whether they make life more affordable for residents.

Housing is the largest chapter, and it opens with the Affordability Index. The Greens would base affordability targets on 30% of median household incomes, create a Vancouver Public Housing Bond, require affordable homes in large developments, and restore a Renter's Office paid for by the Empty Homes Tax. The other chapters cover cheaper transit and safer streets, childcare and recreation, and food security through food hubs, food recovery and community gardens.

City Council would act on most of these, because it controls zoning, permit fees, city staff and city-owned land. Some commitments depend on other bodies. TransLink, a regional body the city does not control, runs the buses, so the party can only press it for lower fares. Community centres belong to the separately elected Park Board. The platform also asks the Province and the federal government for housing money, including $2 billion from the federal government.
