Chiara Padovani won the Ward 5 York South-Weston seat on October 26, 2026, receiving 13,407 votes in the City of Toronto's unofficial results. Incumbent [Frances Nunziata](/on/toronto-2026/candidates/frances-nunziata) finished third with 7,441 votes, closing a political career that began in 1985.

Daniel Di Giorgio finished second with 9,818 votes. The ward had nine candidates on the ballot. The City has not yet declared the official results.

NOW Toronto reported that Padovani lost to Nunziata by 94 votes in the 2022 election. Nunziata had held the seat since 2003 and previously served as a councillor for the former City of York from 1985. She had also served as Speaker of Toronto City Council.

## What Padovani has promised

Padovani ran on a platform focused on tenant rights and housing in Ward 5. Her housing page says she will work to bring in a bylaw against Above Guideline Increases, the rent increases above the yearly limit that landlords can ask the Province to approve. She also committed to rent control on all housing built on public land.

On tenant services, she committed to hiring a tenant organizer in her ward office to help with urgent tenant needs. Her platform also includes a push to pass a Maximum Temperature Bylaw so residents are not forced to stay in overheated rental homes.

## The ward

Ward 5 York South-Weston covers the York South-Weston neighbourhood in northwest Toronto. The councillor for Ward 5 sits on City Council and votes on the City budget, bylaws, rezonings and other decisions affecting the whole city.

Padovani will take office on November 15, 2026, when the new council term begins under section 6 (1) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. The first meeting of the new City Council is on November 18, 2026.
