Three masked men forced their way into a home in Toronto's Bridle Path neighbourhood at about 3:45 a.m. on October 29, 2026. Four family members were inside. By the time Toronto police arrived at Hyde Park Circle, near Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East, three people had been shot and two had been struck in the head with a hammer.

All four were taken to hospital. Toronto police say two have life-altering injuries but all four are expected to survive.

As of November 2, two suspects remain at large. Toronto police Inspector Kristy Smith has said all three are considered armed and dangerous, and police have asked the public for help.

## What police have confirmed

Three men wearing dark clothing and masks approached the home and forced their way inside, according to Toronto police. They were armed with handguns and at least one had a hammer.

In an update on October 31, Insp. Smith said police identified one suspect and issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for that person. Smith said the suspect had also arrived at St. Joseph's Health Centre with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder on the day of the attack. He was discharged from the hospital before police were able to connect him to the home invasion.

"When someone walks into a hospital there's a lot of things that need to happen in the period of time for when we become aware of them, to us forming the reasonable grounds that we need to make an arrest and link that person to the crime of this home invasion," Smith said, according to CityNews Toronto.

She said police believe the suspect was accidentally shot by one of the other two suspects during the attack, according to Global News.

"We know who you are, and we're looking for you. Your world just got smaller," Smith said of the suspect, according to CityNews Toronto.

Police described the two outstanding suspects as wearing dark clothing and estimated to be about 20 years old. No further descriptions were released. Smith said all three are considered armed and dangerous.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said his officers would be "relentless" in their hunt for the suspects, who fled the area in a dark-coloured SUV, according to CityNews Toronto.

## Not targeted: police say the motive was opportunistic

Insp. Smith said investigators do not believe the home invasion was targeted at the specific family.

"We talk about affluence and people wanting things and entering into an area of affluence where there are things that are sought after is what we believe the motive to be at this time," Smith said, according to Global News.

The Bridle Path is among Toronto's highest-income neighbourhoods, situated between Lawrence Avenue and the Don Valley to the north and south, and Bayview Avenue to the west.

Police said the three suspects chose the home based on the character of the area rather than knowledge of the specific family inside. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not ruled out any lines of inquiry.

## 119 home invasions in Toronto in 2026

The Bridle Path attack drew particular public attention, but it is part of a broader pattern Toronto police have tracked through the year.

According to CityNews Toronto, citing police data, 119 home invasions have been reported in Toronto in 2026, up more than 35 per cent from the same period in 2025.

At a Toronto Police Services Board meeting in April 2026, Insp. Smith described a significant increase in home invasions in 2024 that was connected to a rise in violent car thefts. She told the board that some areas had become concentration points for these offences. The Bridle Path falls within 33 Division, which Smith identified as one of the divisions that saw an increase in home invasion offences.

CityNews Toronto reported that 32 Division, which covers several North York neighbourhoods, and 53 Division, which covers parts of midtown, were also identified as areas with elevated numbers of home invasions. The report notes that the attacks frequently take place in the overnight hours.

## What happens now in the investigation

Police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about the two outstanding suspects to come forward. Anyone with information can contact the Toronto Police Service at tps.ca or reach Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Insp. Smith said the suspect who was named in the warrant may be in pain or showing discomfort from the shoulder wound. "People may look to see him favouring that side of his body," she said, according to CityNews Toronto.

The investigation is being led by the Toronto Police Service's homicide and major crime units. No charges have been laid against the two suspects who have not been publicly identified.

## What the new council has committed to on policing

Toronto's new City Council takes office on November 15, 2026, and holds its first meeting on November 18. The council will oversee the Toronto Police Services Board, which sets the budget and policy direction for the Toronto Police Service.

Mayor [Olivia Chow](/on/toronto-2026/candidates/olivia-chow) committed during the campaign to keeping the police hiring plan, which calls for 360 new officers a year until 2029. That promise, recorded in her tracker at [/on/toronto-2026/candidates/olivia-chow#promise-police-hiring-plan](/on/toronto-2026/candidates/olivia-chow#promise-police-hiring-plan), has not started: the new term does not begin until November 15. The budget process for 2027 will be one of the council's first major decisions.
