# Weizhen Tang

Three-time mayoral candidate who calls himself a wealth manager and has a 2012 fraud conviction.

Weizhen Tang is on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Mayor, with a nomination filed on May 5, 2026. He received 125 votes in the 2023 mayoral by-election. The Capital Markets Tribunal records that a jury found him guilty of fraud on October 30, 2012. His own website describes him as a wealth management expert and says the action taken against him by the Ontario Securities Commission was unjust.

01 / Introduction

## About Weizhen Tang

Weizhen Tang appears on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Mayor. A certified candidate is one whose nomination the City Clerk has accepted. The list shows the nomination date as May 5, 2026 and gives the website weizhentang.today. That website carries his name and describes him as a wealth management expert. Its home page does not mention the mayoral campaign.

The Local reports that he ran for mayor in 2010 and in 2023. The City’s declaration of results for the 2023 mayoral by-election lists Weizhen Tang with 125 votes, in 72nd place of 102 candidates. The Local says he placed 20th of 40 candidates in 2010. voche.me did not find the City’s 2010 results.

The Capital Markets Tribunal, the Ontario body that hears securities cases, records in its reasons of April 21, 2016 that on October 30, 2012, after a 25-day jury trial, Tang was found guilty of fraud over $5,000. On February 1, 2013 he was sentenced to six years in prison. The Court of Appeal for Ontario dismissed his appeals of the conviction and the sentence in 2015. The Tribunal then ordered that he be permanently banned from trading or acquiring securities, from acting as a registrant, and from acting as an officer or director of a company or investment fund manager.

On September 18, 2024 the Ontario Securities Commission announced that he had been charged with breaching that order. The Commission alleges that between February 1, 2020 and August 31, 2021 he accepted funds from, and traded on behalf of, two Ontario investors, and that the trading lost them more than $150,000. This is an allegation. The release says he was due in court on October 4, 2024 and carries no response from him. voche.me searched for the outcome and did not find one.

His website disagrees with the regulator. It says the Commission froze his accounts in 2009 before any trial, calls this regulatory overreach and racialized enforcement, and links court filings dated December 1, 2025 that voche.me did not open. These are his own statements. The Tribunal’s reasons record that the Commission’s order followed his criminal conviction. The website also calls him “The Chinese Warren Buffett” and says his investment approach has produced verified returns of 1 percent weekly. voche.me has not checked these claims against any source. The Ontario Securities Commission warned the public in 2019 not to invest with him or his companies.

## Priorities & positions

Campaign-source summary

Summarized from the campaign’s published profile. These are stated positions, not an assessment of results or a complete platform.

01

### Using vacant homes and rooms for housing

A press release that quotes him says Toronto has an execution problem rather than a resource problem, and proposes that the City help identify vacant homes and unused rooms, support repairs and fire-safety work, and connect those spaces with people who are homeless. It says housing assistance could be paid directly to landlords.

The release says the City could buy smoke alarms in bulk and help install them, and that the first response to a basic safety problem should be a quick, affordable fix instead of a fine.

voche.me did not find who wrote or paid for the release. It quotes him throughout, so it is treated here as his campaign’s own statement.

02

### Landlords and tenants, and the use of artificial intelligence

The Local reports that he wants to restore balance between landlords and tenants, add supportive housing elements to private residential agreements where needed, and become “the AI mayor”, using artificial intelligence for fiscal transparency and the optimization of residential infrastructure.

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on October 4, 2026: the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates, the home page of the website he gave the City, The Local’s candidate page, the full reasons of the Capital Markets Tribunal dated April 21, 2016, the Ontario Securities Commission’s investor alert of May 28, 2019 and its release of September 18, 2024, a press release of September 1, 2026 that quotes him, and the City’s declaration of results for the 2023 mayoral by-election.

Gaps. The conviction and the 2016 order rest on the Tribunal’s own text. The 2024 charge rests on the Commission’s release, and voche.me did not find a later record of its outcome. The court filings his website links were not opened. The website’s statements about his investment returns and his career were not checked. The 2010 result comes from The Local only. The Local also gives a release date from prison that differs from the Commission’s 2019 release, so no release date is used here. His social media accounts were not searched. No City or school board role is on his profile. The questionnaire has not been sent.
