01 / Introduction

## About Maria Voutsinas

Maria Voutsinas appears on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Councillor in Ward 14 Toronto-Danforth. A certified candidate is one whose nomination the City Clerk has accepted. The list shows the nomination date as August 21, 2026 and the campaign website votemaria.ca.

Her campaign website says she has served for over 20 years as executive director of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada, that the Council works with all levels of government for 800 independent ethnic media partners, and that its office has been at City Hall for over 20 years. The Local gives the same role and says the partners number in the hundreds. The website adds that she worked in financial services before the Council, is a regular contributor and editor for a Greek Canadian monthly publication, is a founding member of the Danforth Greektown Renewal Committee and holds a Specialized Honours BA in Political Science from York University. voche.me did not check these with the Council, the publication or the university.

Her website and The Local both say she ran for Toronto District School Board trustee in 2014, and The Local says she finished third of five candidates. The City Clerk’s 2014 results contain a Toronto District School Board entry for Maria Saras-Voutsinas in a school ward with 4,984 votes, third of the 4 candidates the results page lists. The spelling differs from the ballot name, and The Local counts five candidates where the results page lists four, so voche.me could not tie the entry to her with a named source and gives no 2014 result.

Her platform pages say she would build a ward office that follows up with residents, push for faster action on missed garbage collection and broken streetlights, support protected cycling routes and reliable TTC service, and insist that the community is respected during Ontario Line construction. They also say she would fight for more affordable, supportive, co-operative and non-profit housing and for new homes near transit. These are the campaign’s own statements.

TTCriders, a transit rider group, asked every Ward 14 candidate 18 questions about the TTC. Its page lists Maria Voutsinas with 16 answers of Yes and 2 of No. That list is TTCriders’ record.

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on October 4, 2026: the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates, its Members of Council page and Councillor Paula Fletcher’s profile, the City Clerk’s 2022 and 2014 results, two pages of her campaign website (home page and Priorities), The Local’s Ward 14 tracker and TTCriders’ page of Ward 14 candidate responses. Every statement taken from her campaign website is written as the campaign’s own account.

Ward context. The sitting Ward 14 councillor on the City’s Members of Council page is Paula Fletcher. The City’s candidate data lists her withdrawal on August 19, 2026, and The Local says she is not seeking re-election. The City’s list has 18 candidates for Ward 14: Maqsood Ahmad, Susan Chapelle, Michael Connor, Dennis Corcoran, Robb Dagenais, Peter De Marco, Sara Ehrhardt, George Fawcett, Mary Fragedakis, John Kladitis, Michael Mitchell, Caryma Sa’d, Dianne Saxe, Devyn Stackhouse, Jason Stevens, Christiane Tetreault, Maria Voutsinas and Denise Walcott. The City Clerk’s 2022 results for Ward 14 list five candidates: Paula Fletcher (20,305 votes, elected), Wali Abro (1,982), James Dyson (1,937), Denise Walcott (1,740) and John De Marco (1,469). A search for a 2026 debate or all-candidates meeting in the ward found none.

Gaps. Her role at the Council, her publication work and her degree were not checked with the organizations. The 2014 trustee entry in the City’s results was left out for the reason given in the biography. No public office is on record in the profile. Her social media accounts and the video on her home page were not opened. The questionnaire has not been sent.
