(Toronto Public Library) candidate profile](https://knowyourvote.to/candidates/toronto-district-school-board-ward-10-karen-emerson) 01 / Introduction ## About Karen Emerson Karen Emerson appears on the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates for Toronto District School Board in Ward 10. A certified candidate is one whose nomination the City Clerk has accepted. The list shows the nomination date as August 20, 2026 and a campaign website, voteemerson.ca. Ward 10 covers Beaches-East York and Scarborough Southwest. Her campaign website says she has advocated for public education for over thirty years and is concerned about its state. It says the province has placed the TDSB under supervision so that elected trustees cannot vote on matters that affect their constituents. The TDSB’s trustee wards page describes the supervision in its own words: during it the powers of trustees rest with the provincially appointed Supervisor. The Toronto and York Region Labour Council’s page dated September 2, 2026, which endorses her, says she worked for a longtime TDSB trustee, Sheila Cary-Meagher, helping families navigate the school system, and has helped build a community arts hub in Beaches-East York for the past 20 years. That page is the Labour Council’s own statement, and voche.me opened no other source on those roles. These are stated positions, not an assessment of results or a complete platform. 01 ### Equitable schools Her website lists saving Model Schools and revoking Bill 33, which requires police in all schools. [Karen Emerson campaign website · Platform ](https://www.voteemerson.ca/platform) 02 ### An end to budget cuts Her website lists restoring evidence-based small class size caps and fixing the funding model, and states a $6.4 billion cut since 2018 as her own figure. [Karen Emerson campaign website · Platform ](https://www.voteemerson.ca/platform) 03 ### Safe and well-maintained schools Her website lists closing a $16.8 billion school repair shortfall, which is her own figure, and making schools community hubs. [Karen Emerson campaign website · Platform ](https://www.voteemerson.ca/platform) 04 ### Restored local governance Her website lists revoking Bill 101, restoring the powers of elected trustees and restoring collective bargaining. [Karen Emerson campaign website · Platform ](https://www.voteemerson.ca/platform) 05 ### Special education Her website lists restoring trustees’ power to attend Special Education Advisory Committee meetings and restoring funding for special education. [Karen Emerson campaign website · Platform ](https://www.voteemerson.ca/platform) [Toronto and York Region Labour Council · Karen Emerson, September 2, 2026](https://www.labourcouncil.ca/karen-emerson-beaches-east-york-scarborough-south-west/) Research status ## What voche.me has checked Evidence reviewed on October 4, 2026: the City of Toronto’s list of certified candidates, two pages of her campaign website, her Know Your Vote T.O. page, the Labour Council’s page about her and its endorsements list, her Instagram page (read through a summary), the City Clerk’s 2022 declaration of results, the TDSB’s 2018 to 2022 trustee list, the TDSB’s trustee wards page and Beach Metro Community News of August 21, 2026. Her priorities and her years of advocacy come from her campaign website and the Labour Council page, and are attributed to them in the sentences that carry them. TDSB wards changed for 2026. Ward 10 covers City wards 19 and 20, which are Beaches-East York and Scarborough Southwest. The TDSB’s 2018 to 2022 trustee list names the old Ward 16 as Beaches-East York and the old Ward 18 as Scarborough Southwest. The City Clerk’s 2022 results show Michelle Aarts elected in the old Ward 16 and Malika Ghous elected in the old Ward 18. Those seats belong to the old wards and are not treated as seats in the new Ward 10. Beach Metro Community News reported on August 21, 2026 that Michelle Aarts registered for the new Ward 10 and withdrew her name on August 20, that the two old wards were merged into Ward 10, and that nine candidates are registered for it. voche.me found no current TDSB page that names the holder of the old Ward 18 seat, because the board’s ward pages loaded only the board’s home page, so that seat rests on the 2022 results alone. The TDSB’s trustee wards page says that during provincial supervision the powers of trustees rest with the provincially appointed Supervisor, that trustees have no official duties with the board at this time, and that this also applies to trustees elected in the October 2026 municipal election. Gaps. Her website states budget figures (a $6.4 billion cut since 2018 and a $16.8 billion repair shortfall) that voche.me did not check against any budget document, so they appear here only as her statements. Her Facebook and LinkedIn accounts were not opened. A name search found no news report on her. No board minutes were opened and no public role is on record for her in these sources. The questionnaire has not been sent.
