Mayor · Toronto 2026

# Chris Alexander

Former federal cabinet minister who said on October 6, 2026 that he is leaving the Toronto mayoral race.

CityNews Toronto reported that Chris Alexander ended his campaign for Mayor on October 6, 2026, half an hour before advance voting opened. The City's list of certified candidates still shows his name for Mayor on October 7, 2026, with his nomination dated July 29, 2026. The House of Commons lists him as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Ajax-Pickering from May 2, 2011 to October 18, 2015. His campaign website publishes dated policy plans, including a plan to build up to 10,000 affordable homes a year and a Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) plan that raises adult fares on some days and lowers them for seniors and youth. Olivia Chow's campaign has criticized his fare plan and said he does not understand the challenges of homelessness. He answered the second point on October 1, 2026.

01 / Introduction

## About Chris Alexander

CityNews Toronto reported on October 6, 2026 that Chris Alexander ended his mayoral campaign that day, half an hour before advance voting opened. CityNews quotes him saying that his path to success "was not obvious and perhaps not there at all", and reports that he did not endorse Olivia Chow or Brad Bradford. The City of Toronto's list of certified candidates for Mayor still included his name when voche.me read it on October 7, 2026. The profile below describes his campaign as it stood before he left the race, and voche.me has not updated the plans it describes.

Chris Alexander appears on the City of Toronto's list of certified candidates for Mayor, with a nomination dated July 29, 2026. CP24 reported that he registered at City Hall that day and described himself as an outsider who has not been on Council.

The House of Commons record lists him as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Ajax-Pickering from May 2, 2011 to October 18, 2015. CP24 reports that he was Canada's ambassador to Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005 and was citizenship and immigration minister in Stephen Harper's government from 2013 until the Conservatives lost power in 2015. His campaign website adds that he joined Canada's foreign service in 1991, worked at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow, served at the United Nations in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2009, and has worked as an executive, advisor and company director in Toronto since 2015. Those details are the campaign's own account, and voche.me has not checked them with the bodies named. voche.me found no statement from him on his current party membership. Toronto candidates run without a party label.

His campaign website sets out five priorities: the economy, the TTC, housing, neighbourhoods and ambition for the city. It also lists six policy papers, five of them dated between August 27 and October 2, 2026. They cover U.S. tariffs, food and public markets, hate crimes, the TTC, homelessness and affordable housing. Each plan below is written as his campaign's proposal. His campaign states costs and dates for some of them, and voche.me has not checked those figures.

On September 18, 2026 the Toronto Star reported that he would raise adult TTC fares by 10 cents at off-peak times and by 20 cents at morning and evening rush hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. He would lower fares for seniors and youth by 15 cents, create a $120 monthly pass for post-secondary students, and add more plainclothes fare inspectors. He said the plan would add $43 million in revenue each year, and the Star reports that this is his own figure. Chow said in a statement that the proposal takes money from a family's household budget. The executive director of the group TTCriders told the Star that raising fares for anyone is unacceptable during an affordability crisis.

On October 1, 2026 CP24 reported that Chow's campaign told CTV News that he "doesn't understand the challenges we face" on homelessness. He answered that during his time as immigration minister there were almost no asylum seekers or refugees in the shelter system in Toronto or other Canadian cities, and cited his work for the United Nations in Afghanistan. Those are his own statements, and voche.me has not checked them. The Jerusalem Post reported that at a September 2026 debate he criticized Chow for missing a forum on antisemitism held by the Jewish Lawyers of Canada, and that she answered that antisemitism is unacceptable and wrong. On July 29, 2026 CP24 reported that Brad Bradford called him "unfit for this office," and that Alexander rejected the criticism.

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on October 4, 2026: the City of Toronto's list of certified candidates, the home page, Meet Chris page, plan page and policies page of his campaign website, the House of Commons member search results, and news reports from CP24, the Toronto Star and The Jerusalem Post dated July 29 to October 1, 2026. His past roles come from the House of Commons and from CP24. His plans come from his campaign website and are written here as his campaign's proposals.

Gaps. The full text of each policy paper was not opened, only the summaries on the policies page. His Instagram and X accounts showed only a profile line and no posts, and his LinkedIn page returned no readable content, so nothing from them is used. The CTV News article of September 30, 2026 on his homelessness plan did not load as readable text, so the plan is described from his campaign's policies page. His record as a Member of Parliament was not searched in Hansard or the voting records. His time in Afghanistan and at the United Nations rests on his campaign's account and CP24. The questionnaire has not been sent.
