Mayoral candidate Neil Saravanamuttoo released a six-point environmental protection plan on October 20, CTV News reported, promising to replace aging sewers, plant more trees and stormwater ponds, and cut the city's use of road salt.

CTV reported that Saravanamuttoo announced the plan at Maki Park in Bay Ward, one of the areas hit by flooding after heavy rain on Canada Day. The candidate said in a statement quoted by CTV: "Many people are deeply concerned about the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. And in Ottawa, there is a heightened awareness of the damage extreme weather events can cause to our property and safety."

## What the plan says

CTV reported that the plan focuses on protecting Ottawa from severe weather rather than on reducing emissions. Saravanamuttoo said: "As mayor, I will focus our efforts on environmental protection against severe weather events and actions that save us all money."

According to CTV, the plan includes moving faster to replace aging sewers that the candidate says "failed to manage the heavy rainfall patterns we experienced this summer." Saravanamuttoo told CTV he would also improve nature-based solutions for absorbing rainwater: "More trees, plants and stormwater ponds could have absorbed much of the severe weather events that Ottawa experienced," he said.

The plan also promises to reduce the city's use of road salt in winter. CTV did not report a cost figure for any part of the plan, and no breakdown has been published.

## The mayor race five days out

Saravanamuttoo is one of 14 candidates running for mayor of Ottawa, according to CTV News. Voting day is October 26, 2026. Voters choose one candidate for the whole city; this is not a ward race.
