Ottawa paid nearly $10 million to settle 236 legal claims for personal injury and property damage in the first half of 2026, with the largest single payment going to resolve a claim against OC Transpo for a city vehicle hitting a pedestrian or cyclist. CTV News Ottawa reported on a city staff report November 2.

The report goes to the finance and corporate services committee on November 10, 2026.

## OC Transpo claims

The city paid $2.98 million to settle a personal injury claim against Transit Services described in the report as a "city vehicle hitting pedestrian/cyclist," CTV News Ottawa reports. No further details about the circumstances appear in the staff report.

A separate claim against OC Transpo for a collision between a city vehicle and a private vehicle was settled for $1.3 million. Transit Services also settled three additional claims for amounts of $178,272, $125,194 and $105,883, each described as losses on board city vehicles.

## Other large settlements

CTV News Ottawa reports the city settled three claims related to road design and engineering at $1.2 million, $420,615 and $300,889. Four slip-and-fall claims were settled at amounts between $102,680 and $317,761, and two trip-and-fall claims were settled at $152,666 and $639,957.

The city settled 19 claims above $100,000 each and 217 claims below $100,000, with the lower group totalling $1.5 million.

## Pothole claims

The city received 891 new claims in the first six months of 2026. Forty percent of those, about 356 claims, were related to potholes, CTV News Ottawa reports. Staff say pothole claims are the most common type received by the city's claims unit. For the same period in 2025, the city received 320 new pothole claims.
