Ottawa Police Service is asking parents and guardians to check all Halloween candy after a sewing needle was found inside a chocolate bar collected during trick-or-treating.

A parent reported finding the needle to police on November 3, 2026. Ottawa Police say the chocolate bar was believed to have been collected in either the Prince of Wales neighbourhood or the Chinatown area of Ottawa on October 31. No injuries have been reported.

Ottawa Police published a photograph of the item showing the needle visible at the edge of the wrapper.

The two areas named cover different parts of the city. Prince of Wales is a neighbourhood in Ottawa's south end. Chinatown is on Somerset Street West in central Ottawa. Police said they could not confirm which of the two areas the bar came from, only that it was believed to have come from one of them.

Ottawa Police ask parents and guardians who collected candy in either area on October 31 to check every piece before giving it to children or eating it. They say to look for small holes, tears or breaks in packaging and any portion of a wrapper that appears unsealed or tampered with.

If a family has already distributed candy from those areas, they ask that any uneaten pieces be checked now.

Anyone who finds a needle or other object in Halloween candy is asked not to throw it out and to call Ottawa Police at 613-236-1222, extension 7300. Officers may want to collect the item as evidence.

If you live in Prince of Wales or Chinatown and believe you may have handed out candy that could have been interfered with, Ottawa Police ask you to call the same number.

Ottawa Police published the warning on November 3, 2026. The investigation was ongoing at that time and no suspect had been named.

Ottawa residents who collected Halloween candy in the Prince of Wales or Chinatown areas of Ottawa on October 31 should check that candy before eating it, and call Ottawa Police at 613-236-1222, extension 7300, if they find anything unusual.
