01 / Introduction

## About Alex Lawson

CBC News reported on January 23, 2026 that Alex Lawson owns a home framing company, Capital Framers, which he says has 17 employees. He grew up in the Heron Gate neighbourhood. He told CBC News that he voted for Mark Sutcliffe in 2022 but now feels the city is in worse shape. CBC News also reports that he has worked as a lobbyist in technology and construction, serves on the board of West Carleton Disaster Relief, and previously served on the board of the Kanata-Carleton Conservative Association. He told CBC News that he does not see himself as a conservative candidate because municipal politics is not partisan. The City's list shows his nomination dated May 1, 2026, the first day nominations opened.

His campaign website describes him as a builder and says that he began by framing houses after high school and now runs a business. It lists 14 plans, each with a month of release between May and September 2026, and a table of figures such as a 17.9 percent rise in two-bedroom rent since 2022 and a 18.9 percent rise in crime. The site names Ottawa Police annual reports, CMHC and City budgets as the sources. These are the campaign's own figures, and voche.me has not checked them against those sources.

CBC News reported his positions as follows. On May 5 it reported that he had asked for more open reporting from OC Transpo and a plan to hire mechanics. On August 4 his transit plan included bringing back rush-hour bus rapid transit (buses on their own lanes), more checks that riders have paid, a ride code of conduct, cameras on every bus and a 90-day review of management. On August 27 CBC News reported that he had said he would cut development fees in half, something the City did shortly afterward, and that he released a jobs plan that includes a quarterly youth unemployment figure and a fair wage policy for City contractors. On September 15 he said 'I don't want to raise taxes'. In a statement to CTV News, reported by CP24 on August 22, he said the only flags that should fly at City Hall are those of Ottawa, Ontario and Canada.

He is part of two disputes about lobbying. In early June 2026 he filed a complaint with the City's integrity commissioner and lobbyist registrar (the person who reviews complaints about council members and runs the City's public list of lobbyists) against Syntax Strategic, a communications firm, alleging unregistered lobbying of Mayor Sutcliffe's office. On July 27, 2026 CBC News reported that the commissioner closed the matter with no penalty after the firm's chief executive admitted one breach, a lunch she paid for in January 2026. Lawson called the result 'useless'. The firm's chief executive called the complaint politically motivated and said she was considering legal action.

On August 13, 2026 CBC News reported that in January 2025 Lawson emailed several city councillors asking for help to set up a training academy for residential construction, and that he did not register those emails with the City's lobbyist list. He introduced himself as owner of Capital Framers, sent the emails from an address at the lobbying firm Political Intelligence and signed as a senior associate of that firm. He told CBC News that lobbying means having a paid client, that he had none, and that his emails were not lobbying. Two lobbying experts told CBC News he should have registered. A third said the question is complex and depends on whom the emails were sent for. One councillor told CBC News that he notified the integrity commissioner. voche.me found no decision on this matter.

Research status

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on October 5, 2026: the City of Ottawa's list of certified candidates, six pages of his campaign website, and reports from CBC News and CP24 dated January 23 to October 2, 2026. His business and past roles come from CBC News, where he is quoted. His plans come from his campaign and from the reports that quote it, and each is written here as his campaign's statement.

Gaps. His X, Facebook and Instagram accounts showed only a profile line and no readable posts, so none is used. The campaign's blog and survey pages were not opened. The figures on his campaign site were not checked against Ottawa Police, CMHC or City budget documents. No decision was found on the question of whether his January 2025 emails to councillors had to be registered. The City's own lobbyist list and the integrity commissioner's published reports were not searched. His tax pledge has not been released. The questionnaire has not been sent.
