# Alan Riddell

Candidate for Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee in Zone 11; his campaign describes him as a bilingual employment lawyer and former Algonquin College instructor who wants a balanced budget and a back-to-basics approach to teaching.

Alan Riddell is on the City of Ottawa’s list of certified candidates for Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee in Zone 11, which covers City Wards 10 and 16, with a nomination dated August 21, 2026. His campaign website says he is a bilingual human resources lawyer, a former Algonquin College instructor and teacher, and a senior partner in an Ottawa law firm. 01 / Introduction

## About Alan Riddell

The City of Ottawa’s list of certified candidates shows Alan Riddell’s nomination for trustee of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board in Zone 11 dated August 21, 2026. The City’s open data file shows no withdrawal. The other candidates in the zone are Brendan Ray and Jason Glover. The City list gives him a campaign website. CTV News Ottawa lists him in its guide of September 9, 2026.

His campaign website says he was born in Ottawa and attended Ottawa public schools, and holds a B.A. and an LL.B. from the University of Toronto and a degree from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris. It says he practises employment, human rights and public law in English and French, is a senior partner in a prominent Ottawa law firm that it does not name, and has appeared before several courts and tribunals, including as lead counsel in a Supreme Court of Canada decision on the privacy rights of federal public servants under the Access to Information Act. The site gives no case name. It also says he is a co-founder and vice-chair of Young Voices Can!, a charity that encourages dialogue among high school students, and vice president and a board member of Samawada, a charity that builds village wells in East Africa. voche.me did not check these statements.

The site describes the board of the past as marked by infighting, over-spending and poor management, and says a newly elected board must prove itself competent, balanced-budget minded and collaborative. It says that as a trustee he would use his advocacy skills to persuade the Minister of Education to restore full authority to elected trustees, and that he wants to halt the move of students from Ottawa public schools to private and Catholic schools by restoring parent confidence through a back-to-basics approach, while balancing the budget without sacrifices that affect teachers, students and parents.

The board’s page says that since June 27, 2025 the board has been under supervision by the Minister of Education, and that decisions normally made by trustees are made by the appointed Supervisor, Robert Plamondon. The sources read hold no complaint or allegation about him.

## What voche.me has checked

Evidence reviewed on October 7, 2026: the City’s list of certified candidates for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (an Internet Archive copy) and its open data file of nominations, the home page of his campaign website and its voting information page, the CTV News Ottawa list of school board candidates of September 9, 2026, and the board’s page on supervision.

Gaps. His Facebook page needs a login, so nothing from it was used. Pages exist about a lawyer named Alan Riddell. His campaign site names no firm or case, so voche.me could not tie those pages to this candidate and left them out. His degrees, his law practice, his Supreme Court of Canada role, his teaching at Algonquin College and his two charity roles are his own statements and were not checked. No news report that quotes him was found. The voche.me questionnaire has not been sent.
