01 / Introduction

## About Ahmed Rashid

The City’s list of certified candidates shows Ahmed Rashid’s nomination for Councillor in Ward 10 Gloucester-Southgate dated August 20, 2026, with the same date for his registration in the Contribution Rebate Program. The City list gives him a campaign website, an Instagram account and a LinkedIn address. CBC News reported on August 25, 2026 that he has been an assistant in a law firm. CTV News Ottawa gives his age as 25 and quotes him saying he was born and raised in Ottawa.

In the CBC News and CTV News Ottawa questionnaires and on his campaign website he says he grew up in Ward 10, went to school there and was renovicted (made to leave his home so the landlord could renovate), and that he fought to stay in the neighbourhood. He says he worked at a law firm, appearing in court and doing legal research, and spent time in the freedom of information unit and in community outreach at the Ottawa Police Service. He says that in summer 2026 he worked with the Ontario NDP on by-elections and with policy advisers at the Broadbent Institute, helped organize against the proposed expansion of Billy Bishop airport in Toronto, and gathered more than 400 signatures at mosques and by door-knocking for halal mortgage access. These are his own statements, and voche.me has not checked them with the law firm, the Ottawa Police Service, the party, the institute or any organizer. Ontario municipal candidates have no party, and voche.me records the party work only as he describes it.

His campaign platform has three pillars. Affordability covers real utility bill credits instead of deferrals, protection from grid-driven electricity rate increases, housing tax waivers only for homes that meet the City’s affordability definition, and a stronger renoviction by-law. Infrastructure covers a published repair list for roads and sidewalks, battery storage and a public impact assessment for new large electricity connections, and transit reliability. Small business covers a higher small business property tax discount, one City contact for main-street businesses, local hiring in City contracts and support for halal financing. He says he will refuse donations from developers. The campaign website sets out figures and comparisons with Toronto, Barrie, Hamilton and Greenstone, and voche.me has not checked them.

In the CBC News questionnaire he names housing and affordability as the biggest challenge, says a 2027 property tax increase should be capped at 3 percent, supports a transit levy (a separate property tax charge for transit) to cover OC Transpo deficits, a fare freeze and free transit for seniors every day, and gives 5 on a scale where 5 is strongly agree to the statement that building more homes in built-up areas will be important for housing in the ward. He calls the police budget appropriate but says he would freeze it at 2026 levels and move $26 million to housing, mental health and community crisis response, and in the CTV News Ottawa questionnaire he answers no to increasing the police budget. He supports an infrastructure levy paid for with other taxes, such as a tax on empty land, instead of general property tax increases.

In the CBC News questionnaire he also writes that the incumbent councillor voted for the 2026 transit fare increase after saying she would freeze fares, and that the City took four years to pass a renoviction by-law that does not require landlords to pay compensation. These are his claims about the councillor and the City, and voche.me has not checked them in this profile. The sources voche.me read hold no complaint or allegation about him.
